A U.S. Coast Guard 47-foot Motor Life Boat was out for practice maneuvers in the large surf, which is not unusual.
However, a large wave hit that was probably more than they bargained for...at least it's the hardest I've ever seen them get hit.
The air was filled with mist, and they were quite distant, so at times were just a shadow in the mist. I've adjusted them for better
visibility, however, the quality is not the greatest due to the above conditions, and futile attempts to keep the lens dry.

So in regards to USCG inspections. You have to have a minimum amount of equipment, is that right???

I think it's the same as in Canada....boat of a certain size has to have a given list of safety equipment on board. Fire extinguishers, flares, appropriate charts, life ring, heaving line ... that sort of thing.

Varies depending on the size.

But no requirement here for a bell on a pleasure craft... just a "sound-signalling device." I have a wee hand-held airhorn.

I understand the sensible need for off shore equipment but a bell.....??!! I have one....because I got given it and it looks cool in a clasic kind of way..but.. Crossing to another post...I would be much better off turning the stereo up. And dont anybody start lecturing me about bells and sound signals....rules they may be but the department of token gestures needs to have a review.

So when we discussed having to come upto a Cat1 cert to leave NZ waters, many replied with dismay that a Country would require such. Yet you guy's have a form of exactly the same thing. And if I understand this correctly, you have to have it if you are sailing anywhere anytime, not just going abroad. Is that correct?

That is correct. Anywhere, anytime, even on inland lakes, technically.

It isn't a knock on NZ to complain, I don't think. I think most of us assume (probably incorrectly) that people who are going offshore will be more prepared and more well read than the guy going out for the afternoon on the lake behind his house.

I think that if you compare the NZ Cat 1 requirements with the extremely basic USCG list, it would end up very lopsided, indeed.

I have been on one of those boats out of Horseshoe Cove right next to the Golden Gate Bridge but never in those conditions. I asked the Coasties who I was with that day if they had done a roll and and most of them had. They are harnessed in and have breathers that they wear. The boat has a positive metacenter even when completely capsized because the part of the boat over the flybridge is a float with positive buoyancy. One boat that one of the Coasties were on, had the float break loose during a roll. They believe it may have hit the bottom! Man...talk about scared! ...harnessed in, breathing through a type of air regulator while upside down while waiting for the boat to get upright! It must be a rush though for young men and women like that.
