Boy, You Mods Have a Tough Job!

I belong to a couple other forums...they seem to have a high tolerance for flamers.
I get a "kick" out of watching a topic slide inexorably (college graduate here) down hill and winding up in the "Gitmo" of threadom.
It is like watching a plane crash after the pilot has punched out.
It ain't purty...but no one got hurt.

Worthwhile

Spam, extreme rudeness and consumatory language just waste our time so we work at keeping content on this site savory.

No one gets hurt?

Yes they do! Insults hurt! Unjustified insults hurt more!
I'm a 49 year old man... I don't feel I need to be be castigated in public.

Rick,
Thanks to you and those like you on this forum that choose to take the high road. It really helps keep this a nice place to be, where the intellect can be expanded.

The pleasant atmosphere here is only this good because the members want it that way. The staff here is not enough to control 20,354 members. We really don't have extra staff behind the curtains that you can't see. We rely on everyones better nature knowing it's never perfect yet always appreciated.

We can't attract the good technical people any other way and new members can be quickly driven away by a bad experience. For the most part we just mop the floors and take out the trash. Sometimes our Admins crawl under the boat and adjust the propeller.

It really is a lot of members helping a lot of other members. To date it's 265,896 times someone tried in some way to help someone else. That does not count the times someone read something helpful that wasn't direct to them. I can't help but think the real number is actually millions.

You apparently did not get my drift

I am not talking about insults per se....I am talking about the endless gun threads among others....like that one about right of way......that drift and drift ad nauseum....that end up with...my opinion is the only one that's right......I compare the posters that "flame" to the boaters who bellow over their VHFs telling boats to slow down.....like they are the water police.

I have been "reminded" myself a long time back.......I like this civil forum.

Newbie here, But I have to say that after reading through a lot of threads I am very pleased with the way things work around here.

I think that the moderators do a good job (especially considering that the pay ain't so good). The membership here is generally relatively civilised, although whether that is a reflection of the moderation or vice versa is moot. Personally, I find it hard to get insulted by anything I see on an anonymous internet site, whether directed at me or not, but certainly a little bit of reminding people of common (shouldn't that be "uncommon, these days) courtesy and the odd nudge to stop threads drifting / de-railing is a good thing.

Being castigated is bad enough, but in public?
There are lots of better procedures for birth control...

Thanks guys for the compliments. We really do try to keep this forum a pleasant, polite and educational place to visit. Lots of discussion goes on behind the scenes to make this forum a better place...we care. Its not for everyone though since you can never please everyone....but we do strive to make it as close to that as we can get.

That's why we get paid the big bucks.
