I've never heard this story, either, although when I was last at Liberty Landing Marina in NJ across from
Battery Park, I actually thought about how freakin' close the Twin Towers fires must have seemed and how fast you could do a round-trip across the river, even in a sailboat and even against the tide.

posting this. It's amazing and disturbing it isn't better known. I remember quite well the scenes of dusty office workers going out of Manhattan via the main bridges on foot (sometimes without shoes).
