Boatlifters: The Unknown Story of 9/11

Ran across this story, this morning & figured it might be of interest to all:

Boatlifters: The unknown story of 9/11 | Journalist Profile | Reuters.com

There is an embedded video that documents some of the activities & participants that participated in "the band of boats that came together to rescue nearly 500,000 New Yorkers from the World Trade Center site on the day the towers collapsed."

It is truly a remarkable, yet unsung example of the heroism & bravery that came to be commonplace on that day in NY.

Amazing. I was not aware that anything like this happened. I sailed past Manhattan on my way south towards the end of September that year and there was no traffic at all on the water. There was a restricted zone from south of Pier 99 to the Verrazano Bridge. Everything had been shut down. Very eerie.

Bigger than Dunkirk? Not worthy of mentioning.

WMDs in Iraq? Fictional, but front page.

I've never heard this story, either, although when I was last at Liberty Landing Marina in NJ across from Battery Park, I actually thought about how freakin' close the Twin Towers fires must have seemed and how fast you could do a round-trip across the river, even in a sailboat and even against the tide.

Thanks for posting this. It's amazing and disturbing it isn't better known. I remember quite well the scenes of dusty office workers going out of Manhattan via the main bridges on foot (sometimes without shoes).

Incredible...thanks for sharing that. I had never heard of this.
