Boat Owners Who Act Like Classic / Exotic Car Owners

Just noticed this type of guy, or rather just made the parallel.

- Walks around the dock all day talking about his boat.
- Knows the one way he did some repair or upgrade, therefore it's the right way.
- Doesn't really sail anywhere farther than 100 miles, tops.
- Lots of gadgets, boat is immaculate.

Not that there's anything wrong with these types of dudes, but I just realized that for them it's much more about being a "boat owner" than being a "sailor". It's about tricking out the boat with the doo-dads and making everything perfect.

I'm sure the chandleries love them much more than my cheap ass.

I agree, and this type exists in all walks of life, not just the docks.

I keep my boat on a mooring and therefore mostly don't see these guys. Except that when I get back in the evening after a sail they're the ones that are pretty wasted from all their beer boating that day!

PS - I thnk we have some of these boaters here on CF, they "walk" with their fingers.

Good for them! The ones you should be concerned about are the those who get loaded when they take the boat from their marina berths.

From my experience as a diving instructor/dive supervison those who spoke about their abilities/exploits were the ones to look out for.

The best divers went about their business without issues.

I imagine it is similar amongst the sailing comminity.

I work in a chandlery and yes we love them. They come in and buy things on really good sailing days and when we ask why they are not out on their boat. They answer. "It's blowing 15knots out there" Ask 'em what they have, it's usually 40' or more. So they ask about radar.
PS. I have old cars as well as boats so i am in deep poo-poo here.

Yeah for sure, I get that. But keeping a boat in tip-top form all the time is a tremendous amount of work. More power to the guys and gals who can do it, but it's just not for me.

I'm painting my bowsprit (it's off the boat) and one of these guys walks up and starts talking about some of the rough patches of paint. I tell him "yeah but the windlass goes on top of that". He says "well I'm just saying if you're going to paint it you might as well paint it right."

The windlass goes there. No one will see it. No one will care. If you pull the windlass later you'll need to repaint that section regardless.

Wrong answer. You have some fun with it. Something like last guy walked by and said if I pissed where the windless goes I would preserve the wood prevent electrolysis and get better ssb reception. I'm doing that every night now with great success.

Should have told him the vast amount of 5200 you plan on useing will most likely cover so much of the pulpit that painting wont really matter.

This was my first dock guy experience: I had just bought the boat, and the holding tank was pressurized. Poo juice had slowly dribbled out of the vent and made a thin dark line down the side of the hull. Guy on the dock comes up "Son, you got Diesel coming out of that vent." and I'm like "I think it's poo", so he goes up to it, swipes some onto his fingers, rubs it between his forefinger and thumb underneath his nose while inhaling deeply, and says with confidence "Nope, that's diesel."

But... to be honest, I really did not know what I was doing, at all, when I started out, and the random folks on the dock were generally very helpful. They let me borrow tools, showed me how to use them, made sure I knew all about 5200.

Yes, back in my scuba instructor days I'd always watch clients set up their tanks. They told me a lot more about their experience level with their hands then they ever could with their mouths.

I was once asked to serve as watch captain on a friend's 100' yacht, a boat that had a full-time professional captain. He insisted that watch captains chart the vessel's position every hour of each watch, even though the boat had digital record keeping abilities. On the second day of our voyage, I asked him why he wanted us to keep a track on the paper chart. His reply, "That's how I tell if you really know what you're doing or if you're just here because you're the owner's buddy."

Exactly!!! And its not just the sailing community that's exactly the same ... in my experience it works the same way in most sports/leisure activities.
