Bluenose 2 Refit

Apparently the repairs she needs are more extensive than first thought. So, in addition to missing the 2010 season due to her refit, she won't be at any Tall Ship events for 2011 either.

I had the pleasure of watching her sail S.F. Bay, and her crack crew bring her to the dock. Also lucky enough to get a tour aboard her....she's a beauty......i2f

Re: Bluenose 2 Refit

I am currently in Lunenburg high & dry on stands in the L.I.F.E. shipyard where the Bluenose 2 is being rebuilt ..... it is a rebuild ( from the keel up ) & not just a "refit" .... story is that the Bluenose 2 was built in 1963, "on the cheap" as an advertising / publicity stunt ... when it was decided to haul out & refit ( I watched the haulout in 2010 ) so much rot was discovered that the "refit" turned into a rebuild .... the end result will be a totally NEW Bluenose 2 with none of the original timber remaining .... IMHO it is wonderful that the skill & craft are still here in Lunenburg & they are able to build such an amazing ship to the exact 1920s Bluenose specification ...

Re: Bluenose 2 Refit

I am in Vacamonte Panama yard right now. There is a 1919 powerboat names Islamorada being redone. It's amazing what can be done in a day's work with 10 guys hammering, and sawing.......i2f

Re: Bluenose 2 Refit

What a great view of a great ship. It reminds me of the description of Slocum's "rebuild" of Spray wher there wasn't anything original left of her when he was done, though in this case I'm sure they won't change the design.

So will any original equipment remain afterwards, such as spars? I suppose the Bluenose 2 was a replica to begin with, but it's been around long enough to have a bit of its own history now.
