America's Cup 34 in AC72 Catamarans !

Well, old Nathaniel Herreshoff is probably happily flying a hull on his catamaran Amaryllis in that regatta in the sky!

In 1876, Nathaniel Herreshoff entered Amaryllis, a 33-foot catamaran, in a New York Yacht Club Centennial Regatta and won going away--nothing anywhere close--and was promptly banned from competition by the NYYC! Sailing development was virtually limited to monohulls for 100 years!

No more guessing--it has been announced that America's Cup 34 will be sailed in San Francisco in the new America's Cup class AC72 catamaran by all competitors.

Even US Sail is getting involved--and they supported dropping the Tornado catamaran class from the 2012 Olympics!

Could be interesting!

AC is a duel fought between lawyers because of the fact that some ambitious and rich, but only modestly gifted, sailors simply could not get it on the water.

Really, once it got to the Oracle-Alinghi comedy stage I lost all respect for the event.

To me this great news. There was nothing really out of the ordinary about the Alingi Oracle battle being about legalities. When the NYYC had the cup they required boats to come on their own bottom for many years. You have to build a little bit better boat to cross the Atlantic than merely a few coastal miles. Somebody (American) once said ,"why would you build a plastic boat if you didn't want to cheat" It is simply a ace between people who like to win and are used to winning and leave no stone unturned in their efforts to do so. These are where the best teams come together to see who can get their boat around the course fastest. Bring it on.
