America ... U.S.A.

Where would Henry David Thoreau fit into today's American society ...

Why is it that governments control us and inhibit individuality so completely?

He'd be working as a tenured, teachers union member of the Concord Massachusetts school system.

As the husband of a tenured
Union teacher this pisses me off
Just what do you think keeps the profession a profession?
Tenure arose out of the patronage
pit that was public education.

that swirled into the pit fast

Far as Thoreau goes he would be saying the same things now as before. If you do some searching you find the same comments about gov't 200 years ago as now, only the technology has changed.

Re: America ... U.S.A.

It is almost as if you said he did fit in back in his times. He did not. He was a misfit and so opted for the cabin. Escapism is a s common today as it was in the old days.

The governments we have are just like us. If they inhibit anything it is only because we do not care about individualism. Most of us do not. Most of us want to be alike. A shocking case of individualism is when your iPhone is pink.

If you care about your individualism you are an enemy of the state, US, EU or any other well organized state. States care for many alike units that are easy to manage and provide predictable economic output. An individualist is NOT easy to manage.

Swallow it. Get yourself a log hut, in Alaska, Siberia or better yet in the Antarctic (plenty of regulation there too but way fewer enforcement officers).

Cheers,
b.

How is this not political, and what does this have to do with boating?

Please get a grip and learn a little history before you fly off the handle next time.

Thoreau was a teacher in Concord... nothing wrong with my comment, and probably the most likely spot for him to land in 2016.

An honest answer the the OP's question.

And most importantly is not an easy person to pry his $$ away from him.Be it real estate taxes, electric, gas or what have you. What gall do all those self-sufficient and self-contained cruisers with theirs sails for propulsion, their solars, watermakers and composting toilet have to use "our" waterways without paying "their fair share".

PS If those enviro-nazis really cared about our environment instead of putting regulatory barriers up to boat liveaboards they would welcome them for their smaller footprint alternative to landlubbing.

Which has in it's description: "Off Topic content should still remain loosely related to boating". Pretty sure the forum rules apply here as well, so I'm not sure what your point is
