A "THUD" in the night, what would you do?

Okay, I won't tell you what it was (found out after the sun came up), but let me give you the situation:

- Glass calm night. Cold, dew, no wind.
- 2:45am.
- You're in the marina. No boats next to you; protected on all sides by concrete.
- You inspected the mooring lines that day.

Then all of a sudden, a THUD shakes the entire boat. Like someone struck the top of the deck with a sledge hammer. So the first thing I did was:

- throw the bilge pump into manual on, get the emergency bilge pump handle in my hand, grab the flashlight, and check the bilge.

What would you do, and what would think it was?

Yah, I'm thinking either a croc or perhaps even a log or something floating around under you with the currents. Perhaps even a turtle.. They seem to be pretty slow and dodgy. Let us know what it was.. I'm really curios now!!

They have Crocs in SanDiego ??????
Reb, I am impressed with your clear thinking upon waking from sleep like that. What it could be though....early hrs of the morning....I am sure you would have said if it was a stray boat hitting you, so it must be a real doozy to ask like that.....??? nup you got me with that one.

Chinese submarine surfacing (a bit off course). We had one in Australia a few decades back, Victoria somewhere, took the PM away if I remember rightly. Any heads of state missing in San Diego?

Nicolle thinks it could have been a big Pelican! Or whatever sort of big birds you get there. Or maybe a seal or Otter or a big fish.......something cute and fluffy!

I'm (Mark) inclined to agree with the Chineese Sub theory... or a New Zealender digging for gold went right through the earth and popped up under your keel?

earthquake. We have felt a few on the boat and they are a thud and shudder.

Let's see, Reb, you said the thump was on "the top of the deck". Maybe you should have suspected intruders and whipped out your "defensive weapon" of choice! Or maybe that's what the manual bilge pump handle was for.
