I new I had missed something. Ok , the Navy seal actually came off the chinese submarine which is actually owned by the US Navy. They purchased it at Walmart but it was being recalled due to a malfunction which is why he had to abandon it.

Well if it had been me and it was that early in the morning...It was the ex-wife throwing the divorce papers from the lawyer on the deck from the top of the dock!

After much deliberation I have come to the conclusion that I used to be undecided but now I'm not so sure. ....................... But I'm dying to know the reason.

Now I am pretty sure it was the WiFi antenna falling from the spreaders. Hence the silence emanating from San Diego...

Oh man! So sorry for forgetting about this thread! I've been working like crazy, and it slipped past my radar.
To answer the question of the thud, and I assure you that all of your answers were much more interesting than the real deal... I studied every inch of the boat the next day, and nothing was looking weird. But then I realized it: the staysail boom was sitting on top of the deck box, and the deck box previously has been open, sitting on its lock-latch, by about two inches. The weight of the boom (the staysail sheet was in rather tight), and perhaps the dew coating the metal latch, caused the whole damn thing to snap shut, which of course was right above our heads. THUD! The vibration carried through into the deck, which then went all the way throughout the boat, and scared the crap out of us. The racoon chasing me up the mast would have been a much better story!
