100 year old message in a bottle found

What an interesting find on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. Amazing that this bottle survived hundred years.

One I found a few years ago on a very isolated beach we had to climb down a rope to get to. Thems the cliffs behind us.

Hmmm...I'm smelling a hoax here.

If it's not a hoax, the bottle must have gone ashore and been buried in the sand very soon after it was chucked in the sea. No marine growth and the seal hasn't failed.

Miine?

It was interesting. Very romantic...
It was written on the back of a cargo and weapons declaration from Hamburg dated 2001 (we found it 2009) so it was from a cargos ship's officer probably using old forms as scrap paper. He would have thrown it into the Pacifc somewhere and we found it on Lizard island a remote island high up in the Great Barrier Reef.

It says:

all my Love to
XXX XXX
irish Woman fm Dublin
(signature unreadable)

[sic capitalisations]

I think he met her somewhere and fell in love and was putting that love in the bottle to send it who knows where. A sailors reality of sailing the world and meeting people you will never see again.

I haven't tried to contact either as its private and I don't know his name.

The bottle was not well sealed, just the normal cap, so I dont think he expected it to last.

Its a very sweet note and bottle and I treasure the note as a cruising memory.

I found one once. It contained Bible verses written in Spanish. I always visualize someone on a ship in distress writing that one.

Have also found NOAA data collection devices...with their own return to sender envelope enclosed.

Re: 100 year old message in a bottle found

Even a half serious bottle collector should be able to authenticate the age of the bottle. My ex collects bottles, she could determine the year and even place of manufacture.

Taking a sample piece of paper for the laboratory would reveal if the paper is legit for the alleged time.

Or we could just leave it as a romantic story. Over the yrs I've tossed overboard many a note in a bottle. I always included long/lat and date. I would be thrilled to hear back.

Riiiiiight. So what you are saying is you weren't upon them cliffs, spied a bottle, and suddenly became thirsty? Clambering down cliffs requires a reason. The possibility of quenching a thirst is a very good reason.
