Maggie & I spent 9 summers in Ft. Lauderdale. We moored at a resort-style condo' building (legal live-aboard docks).
Our "dock-rent" evolved approximately thus:
1992 - '94 ... $300/month
c/w 30A 120V
shore power, cable TV,
excellent amenities,
NO parking (car),
No Air-Cond allowed
($50 extra EACH)


1995 - '96 ... $500/mo c/w car parking
and Air-Conditioning
Still on 30 Amp shore
power supply.

1996 ........... $ 550 /mo c/w car & A/C

Facility adds: waste pumpout to each dock slip.

1997 - '99 .... $ 600.mo c/w car & A/C

2000 ............. $650/mo c/w car & A/C

Is living aboard even a reality anymore?

I want to do it more then almost anything, but by next year when I can do it, will I even be able to?

Making me nervous, too. We're about to become liveaboards and eventually cruisers. I'm seeing some real "boat trash" prejudice in what we've been reading...

In the past I have been a live-aboard. Where I was there were generally two types of live-aboards. 1) People who maintained and sailed or motored their boats occasionally and 2) Those who were looking for a cheap place to live. I can see the dilemma this causes a harbor. Having lived aboard for 4 years, I saw it all from brown matter being pumped out the side of a cement houseboat at dusk to folks letting their animals run the docks crapping where ever they felt. So when the harbor installs rules, fee increases and so on, they have to do it across the board. They cannot single one type of group out. I find it realistic that a harbor charges for electricity and a live-aboard fee. I also find it reasonable that they patrol the docks for people sneaking aboard while the rest of us have to pay.

It's a lifestyle - not a living. At least with the economy in the dumper you won't be priced out with all the new money. If everyone coukd afford to live aboard it would be a whole lot worse.

You can pick the place and the time but you still pay cash. At some level it has not changed that much.
