Your experience with 3M SafetyWalk nonskid

We started using the 3M SafetyWalk tread tape on our race boats in the 1970s. We use the 2" wide gray product number #370 mainly for hatches. We've used small amounts of the white product #280 which is less aggressive, more comfortable to sit on - good for cockpit seats, etc.

We have been cruising full time for 16 years on our custom Morrelli & Melvin cat ADAGIO. Around the Pacific from Tasmania to Alaska, currently in back in NZ.

I would like to hear reports of your experience with the 3M SafetyWalk tread tape. How many years does it typically last? How does it fail? Have you used the 3M Edge Sealer?

PS - here's a 2010 gallery showing some of our first experience with mass failure of the tape. In 2009 San Francisco, just before sailing west across the Pacific, we replaced all the 3M because we had time and wanted to know it would be good for another decade. This is the 3M 600 series clear tape - it failed in 10 weeks. 3M replaced for us in NZ. Don't use the 600 series clear, at least on gray acrylic hatches.

These days I don't reach for this anymore. Take a look at hydroturf instead (though not on hatches). It not only adds a very comfortable non-skid, even when sitting on it, but also makes the boat more comfortable to walk on, adds insulation, and deadens sound.

On a boat wooing a core replacement on the bow I have even recommended it instead of trying to do a cosmetic repair. Just glue it down on top of the structurally repaired fiberglass and get on with life.

I love this stuff.
