Re: You Might Be a Liveaboard - if . . .

If the first thing you do in the morning is check the barometer/temp and then look at the sky. SEcond thing is check the weather forecast.

Last thing you do before going to bed is check the mooring lines

If you wake up when the wind shifts

If you realize the only shoes you have are either flip flops (daily wear) or boat shoes (dressing up)

You consider "Formal Dress" as having your shirt tucked in your pants

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

formal shoes are achieved by replacing the seine twine in your canvas shoes with leather laces (which you store on a zip lock with some sort of shoe oil)

Re: You Might Be a Liveaboard - if . . .

Tonight we have 40 knots followed by a prediction for 70knots by early morning SO you might be a liveaboard if you have 15 ropes tying towards the wind direction!!!!!

This morning I had a dream about finding a sailright sewing machine for $100.
Only been back living aboard about 4 months now. How quickly it consumes your brain...

A "fall blow" here is 32kt gusting to 48kt" 45kt gusting 65or70kt is common in the winter (usually a couple times a week)....not including storms.
My mast head is 45' off the water w/360' of 1/4" wire + running back tackle and halyards. Winter storms come from the SSE which means a fetch that runs diagonally across the harbor hits me on the starboard quarter....to make it worse I have an 8'9" beam. 48kt gusts had me healed over at 10 degrees on bare poles......my 47' mast gets pulled for the winter and trucked up to my shop. Boom truck round trip in/out will be about $120, not sure about mast transport (3miles), if it is too expensive marina will let me store it for $75/mo.
What goes on up the mast is the most neglected and one of the most important pieces of maintenance on boats. Because the local boom truck operator charges so little, I try and pull my mast every time my boat is out. (Actually first time I had my boat out I was living on the hard for the winter and the other time I was replacing the standing rigging so it had to come out anyway)

You know you're a liveaboard if you've ever unlocked the stove gimbals while still in the slip because there was no other way you could cook breakfast in a storm.

YMBALI-

...Winterizing involves getting the dehumidifer and holiday decorations out of storage.

...Part of hurricane preps are filling the water tanks and doing a last load of laundry and shower up at the marina before power goes out.

...You sweat the storm surge but not the power outage as a result of a storm.

...the impacts the storm had on your life are that the pumpout boat was cancelled for the week.

...your kids have arguments over whether Santa will deliver a toy or not because it is "too big".

Re: You Might Be a Liveaboard - if . . .

You have to crawl, backwards and ducking your head, out of your bed, thru the bathroom, to get to the kitchen and dining room. And you can do all that in 3 steps...

Exactly! You know you're a liveaboard if you know the exact combination of space heater, microwave, toaster, coffee pot that can be run at any time without tripping the circuit breaker at the dock.

(And when you've had to go outside a zillion times anyway to get it working again.)

There is a kind of comfort in knowing I am not alone in this...

I even know how high the toaster oven and heater can be set and still not trip the circuit when the microwave is on!

Microwave? Toaster? Ah you're apparently not a minimalist sailor. Perhaps you can be conjoled into looking at the thread "What a woman needs?"

(just a good-natured jab) :-)
