Sitting on a mooring in Bora Bora. Wind gusting 25kts. I need to take on diesel for a departure later today to Tonga and the fuel dock just isn't an option right now.
Looks like I'll be spending the morning humping Jerries...again, and again, and again...

Where are all the folk who say "You're so lucky..." now!? LOL

a 12v fuel pump is invaluable for pumping up direct from the dinghy ,we regularly did 3000 liters in the dinghy in egypt in multiple trips, but at 8cents a liter one has to make sacrifices!

Vic, some fuel hungry friends of ours bought a 200 litre bladder that just fit into their dinghy, plus a 12 volt transfer pump. The bladder takes up much less room (folded up) than the equivalent jerry jugs, and they have found it to be very useful.

A thought for your future, but not doing you much good right now!

5 Gerry cans and I'm full up. Haven't been to a fuel dock in years. Just grab my collapsible hand cart and a couple of Gerry jugs to fill the tank. Of cours, 25 gallons only gives me 50 plus hours of motoring. The internal tank and 15 gallons in jugs on deck have never come close to running out several multi day motoring treks.

Vic, from where is fuel available now-a-days? Vaitape? If so, one option is to go pick up one of the Oa Oa's moorings, and base the project out of there. In any event, I suggest loading only 4 of the 5 gallons into each jug, makes it a little easier on you to make multiple trips. Borrow as many jugs as you can fit in the dinghy. When you get the full jugs back to the boat, use a halyard to lift them aloft and over to set in line by the deck fill. When all are aboard, start loading in the fuel, via the Baja filter. Repeat whole operation. Have lunch and rest up a bit. Then back to work. How many gallons will you need for tradewind sailing from Bora Bora to Tonga? Really shouldn't be that much, and there used to be a fuel jetty in Neiafu. Do you plan to go via Niuatoputapu?

Anyhow, enjoy, it's all lovely. Planning to stop at any of the mid-ocean reefs?

Have you met Lokmam at the Bora Bora yacht club? If so, would you mind bringing over a prop of ours that got caught up in Customs? Lokmam still has it behind the bar somewhere.

Hi Jim. Wish we'd known. Could have easily got it for you. We actually called around there in the dinghy but it was 4:30 and they weren't opening until 5, and they don't have a happy hour and I'd worked up quite a thirst!
It's not really a club as such... just a restaurant. Just arrived in Savu Savu, Fiji so not going back for it... sorry!

Hi Ann,
Bit of a rushed trip so went direct from Bora Bora here to Savu Savu in Fiji. Arrived yesterday evening.
We planned to go to Tonga but the generator packed in a couple of days out and Fiji is the only place with an agent in the area.
Oa Oa is no more. It's now a restaurant called something like Maikai???
We did in fact use their mooring for the cost of a cocktail or two. The run to the fuel dock is short from there.

I'm still dumb enough to pretend I'm young so I just did 3 trips, 4 jerries each time with 5 gals. Heave them up and go again. Wasn't that bad. Just looking for sympathy.
We got here with half of it left, and that's after having to use the main engine for 4 hours charging every night. Solar panels handled the daylight stuff.
We'll just have to do the trip again, but slowly next time.

Not a bad idea. We actually have a 12v transfer pump on board but you must be able to get greater volume ones because this one would take 20 minutes at least to empty a jerry can.

You must be able to get bigger volume ones than our pathetic one, It would take us a week to pump 3000 litres
