Re: Who "Owns" What?

Are you looking for an ethical answer or a legal one? Two different things. If I were a judge, I wouldn't hear either case, but that's just me.

If it was sent in private keep it that way unless the originator ok'd to share. It's a matter of mutual respect and trust.

I just wrote that in my posting...you just paraphrased me and posted it as your own thoughts....

When I was selling my boat recently, I posted lots of pictures. After my boat was sold, I was surprised to see my pictures in someone else's boat ad. If you post it...you've given it away. I'm under strict instructions to NOT post any pictures of my kids.

Ann, I think you need to give us all the intimate details before we can really accurately judge the situation . . . Perhaps with a couple pictures . . .

Aha! The old rule applies. Do not publish ANYTHING that you would not like to see on the front page of the newspaper....or the net, for that matter.

I think Anne was asking for opinions and clarification rather than be judged.

Second one. Someone goes to a great deal of effort to take a picture of their boat to give the pic to their partner for a birthday present. Said pic is printed and placed on the bulkhead. Which one gets to use it for their avatar? The one who took it? The one who thought it was a gift? or????

Please add your reasons which underlie your opinion.

Thanks,

Ann,

I hate seeing cut and pastes. If it is not a full quote it is often out of context.
Those that indulge it that should go into politics.

First time ever I've been completely baffled by a post

I can only imagine there's some back story of which I'm ignorant?

Re: Who "Owns" What?

I work with contracts on a daily basis. Often things are discussed back and forth. I have found that I often **keep conversations verbal** because once you put something onto the internet through forum, social media, email, facebook or wherever it is not yours anymore. Right or wrong, that is how it works.

If anyone ever wants to keep something totally private, don't share it with anyone. Regardless of what is considered right or wrong, courteous or polite, once your written words are in the possession of another person.....you can't control where they end up.

Think of how many stars have video footage and sex tapes "leaked".

I can't believe you are baffled. Some people pick and choose parts of others posts. Taking things out of context by doing so. Often something is quoted without a statement before a comer.

Politicians seem to make a habit of that. Leave out the preface.

Hi Cadence,

sorry, for some weird reason it went right over my head that you meant changing a quote's meaning to suit one's own ends by cutting/pasting, ie. as in politics.
Didn't see it 'til too late to edit.
Hadn't considered that aspect of it - It's OK though, I can always claim the senior moment defence again

I agree with this, in principle.

However, in the second case, based on my own marriages and every married couple that I know, the wife always supercedes logic, principle, rules of law, facts, succession, Parliamentary Procedure and anything you ever promised your buddies, simply because hell hath no fury like you know who.

Just be glad it's just a photo and not the family jewels she wants. How about mirror imaging the pic for him, or using a different but equally beautiful pic for him?

I can claim a senior moment by even posting it. It just doesn't strike me as something that should be done. If someone is quoting, it should be the entire post not a segment?

Re: Who "Owns" What?

It's a fact that I'm easily confused these days but this time it's partly Ann's fault, moving the goalposts.

A dodgy cut & paste job subterfuge in post no. 1 turned into a "case of the red letter" type deal in post no... 12 was it?

Don't know how Jim copes but I did notice he's keeping his head down
Which is what I think I might do for a bit.
