Re: Where in South Eastern Fl to hang out for a Month?

This thread has been quite an education, for me.
“Sailor park”
“Looser Cruiser”
“Water soluble marriages”
"Velcro Beach"

Yes, funny cruising vocabulary, very descriptive.

Ive watched a number of "water soluable" marriages disintegrate shortly after a boat purchase. A broker friend of mine has enough experience with sales to them that he can see them coming. Often they become short term "looser cruisers" who outfit the boat with every toy imaginable, but never actually leave the dock (they are usually too upscale for the "sailor park" and that might involve actually anchoring). When they finally go, they dont make it far. Then a very nicely outfitted, barely used, boat goes up for sale cheap.

My pick is for Marathon over Key West. Facilities are a lot better.

Protection is WAY better. Anchored or Moored you are going to get bounced around when these winter winds are blowing from the North in KW

The way it was explained to me -- Key Weird has lots of protection from the North -- its called the panhandle.

I think I’ll try Marathon first, after all KW is just a day sail away

We never go to Key West by boat. Too boat unfriendly (no good anchorages and super expensive marinas). Bad enough by car!

The intracoastal near downtown Miami has tons of nooks and crannies to drop the anchor and stay. There are dinghy docks Apple Sea Isle Marina and Mia Marina and then you have access to either South Beach or downtown Miami. It was a lot of fun!

A nice little hidey-hole on your way south is the anchorage in Oleta River State Park, between Hollywood and North Miami Beach. A brief respite from overdevelopment. You could spend days or weeks in there doing nothing in particular. Plenty of stores within walking or cheap Uber distance.

If it is cold in Georgia it will be cold in Florida.. Maybe 10 degrees warmer.
You need to get south of Puerto Rico to get consistent weather in the 80's in the winter. Key West might be a little warmer but it has become a drunken version of Disney Land with homeless people and cruise ship passengers.

Don’t agree: We spent a week on the hook in Key West.
Anchored in 20’ of water and used the dink to go shopping, lunch, dinner and visit friends on other boats.
Had a great time, no negatives I can think of.

The mooring field in KW can be painful in a North breeze. Went through on my 25’ powerboat. I wouldn’t have wanted to sleep through that rocking and rolling.

Well, without a good norther, I guess that is true.

I guess the other thing for me is that I have been to Key West so many times, that if I never went again, I would be okay. I just think that these days, it's the worst place in the Keys.(But, I realize opinions vary on this subject).
