Re: What's Wrong with this Pic, or Look before you Untie ......

If you ever visit St. John - USVI, you'll see a lot of reddish/brown mongooses crossing the streets. Early settlers brought them in to combat snake infestation. The only problem with that was that snakes were prowling at night, while mongooses were roaming during day time. Eventually, the mongooses made a dent in eliminating much of the snake population in St. John. Now, you can see mean looking mongooses everywhere.

In American Samoa, the locals brought in snakes to combat rodent infestation. The snakes eradicated all rodents and migratory birds as well; no more birds to be seen, anymore. American Samoa can't get rid of the snake infestation.

Short shortsightedness is very costly.

Probably Boa constrictor imperator. I'd look it up for you in my Mexico herps manual, Zee, but it's in my office and I'll be on the boat for at least a week.

Those snakes need to immerse in water before shedding their skins, so it's possible it was recently working on that. Don't be alarmed if Bubba shows up with a skin over the course of the next few days.

They're a fairly small, fairly common boa that only grows about 7', so it's probable that the one who visited you was an adult.

ty bash--is good to know he wont be a problem if he finds his way back here.... we also have cocodrilos here--lol human beings did not inhabit this place first, no sir....

sometimes we forget the original inhabitants of places were not on two legs, unless they were extremely hairy or tropical .....

there is a culebra del mar that is naaasty---yellow and black --- when those showed up in zihuat, the bay emptied of fish, completely--fishermen splainedloosey to me about those--i saw it behind my boat--was eating a fishie...beautiful and deadly.

Hmm. I'm second thinking your invitation to come sailing down that way.

Zee, I was researching lifeline netting installation and ran across this blog post.
As dat Crow flies: SNAKES ON BOATS

A pic from the post, the snake kept trying to get back aboard after getting kicked off. It's a funny post.

Dang, can anyone pull it up..?
I'll try to repost link, maybe I did something wrong. It is such a hilarious post, I immediately thought of you! I've never read this blog before but the guy has a great wit. I'd cut and paste but it is a long post.

A qute from the blog:
" I showed him ( a local) the pictures of the snake on the camera and his face went into a worried frown turning side to side as he kept repeating Venemo,Venemo"

Sorta of related...ish.... When we lived in Costa Rica, one of our houses was on a coffee plantation. The handyman who tended the fields also lived on the land. My daughter had a 99 cent huge bouncy ball that she got from the local store. Loved that ball to pieces. Called it "Bounce-a-Lina". It would go down the hill in the goo between the coffee plants all the time and she'd tear off down the hill barefoot after it. The handyman always warned her about the Fleur de lance (sp??) snakes and that that ball was going to kill her. (I really tried keeping shoes on the kid...honest). Finally one day he caught her again coming out of the coffee plants barefoot with Bounce-a-lina. He's had enough and he took her ball, stabbed it flat and threw it on the roof. Lol He felt quite strongly about those snakes. We heard the words "venemo" a lot from him. And "muerte".
