I have always believed that a chicken can actually *produce* more than it consumes. Messy doesn't begin to describe it. They are one of the few things in the Universe that can violate conservation laws...

Re: What's the Best Pet on a Boat ?

Our ancestors brought cats to keep the boat free of roaches or parrots to nag them like a woman. Being a woman, I don't need anyone's help for the nagging part and since I dislike roaches and spiders, my cats will follow me on the boat.

Re: What's the Best Pet on a Boat ?

Think I will go along with Joshua Slocum on the subject of pets. Don't need no dorg nor cat. He tried a goat once but offed it at the next port after it ate his chart of the Caribbean. But the Boston spider didn't make noise, kept to herself and probably did her part on roaches as well (the six legged kind).

I love all pets. I pet those dogs, cats etc that OTHER people get up early to walk, clean up their hair off the boat & their clothes or empty litter boxes. I even buy them toys for special occasions. We have a parrot that flies around with the blue herons and a giant aquarium that I can even swim in but never feed or clean. (I even eat things out of our aquarium once in a while- Sorry Charlie!).

Re: What's the Best Pet on a Boat ?

We have lived aboard for two years now with our Gray striped cat, Joshua. He takes care of critters on board and greets anybody coming down the docks, so we always know when someone is walking the docks. He is our alarm clock in the morning, getting us up at the crack of dawn. In the evening he spends his time in my or my wife's lap as we read in the cockpit. I could not imagine life without him.

We loved having our Daschie on board. Now that he is gone I'd nominate a Pet Rock, remember those?
You might have to time travel back 20 or 30 years to find one.
