Learn to dock. Have somebody who knows what they're doing teach you. There may not always be a right way- but there are plenty of wrong ways.

honestly.....tap all available resources (which you have begun to do)......sail in different conditions in a smallish boat you know (or will get to know) well......scrutinize all the details....and then take your knowledge and increasing confidence and go for it.....but always THINK.....and yeah that whole keeping a deadline/destination now/schedule thing is to be REALLY avoided
