Best all round boat I can recommend is a Westerly Centaur 26... currently one for sale on Towndock.net... excellent hull form/build quality.. 6ft headroom, amazing stowage superior to many 30ftrs... shoal draft and... just under $6000... that'll leave you 4K for add ons you may want..

Hey Joe.
Depends on your needs. I too am looking to live on a boat, and nay even disappear in a few years to the islands.

First started drooling over a Morgan 41' Out Island. Big interior, aft cabin, all the things I want. Might go with the '38 or '36 Out Island. Bit smaller, but from my research easier to single handed sail.

What are your "must haves"? That might help narrow it down.

Re: What is the best small sailboat to live on and cruise?

Just a quick note that if you want to liveaboard in a marina, that many marinas in the us, what a 30 foot long boat minimum. A few want 35' minimum.

Just FYI

For whats its worth, a 34' boat gets real small after the third day of rain.

On the hook, tankage is sort of important.

Love the columbias, and think that would be your best bet at your price range. I've lived aboard a number of small boats 23-34. I like em, and feel very comfy offshore in them too.
Like stated above, be sure to check marinas in your area for minimum footage for liveaboard.
Living aboard rocks! Hope you are able to get aboard soon

Bombay clipper 31 is real nice and very liveable. Might find one in that range but it may need work...

Re: What is the best small sailboat to live on and cruise?

I would save some extra bucks and go right for something like a Baba 30 or alike : volume, volume, volume.

Liveaboards want max volume.

Definitely NOT an International Folkboat - this one could be my choice for sailing round the world but never for a liveaboard.

Albin Vega 27 is a good and proven sea boat that can be found in the price range you are shooting for.

I might have to look for a 30 footer than.

How many gallons of water a day is average for usage on a liveaboard for drinking, cleaning, doing dishes, showering?

But there is more nitty gritty info that is helpful. Tankage ability, refrigeration or ice box, electrical needs - that sort of thing.

With my family of 6, when we cruise we figure about 10-15 gallons a day of all but water for our intake (drinking and cooking are done with bottled water - from the dock is fine but not into the tanks since I don't feel comfortable without being able to well clean out the tanks and with no filter system). That is for showers (we don't shower every day unless it's super hot and we've been swimming), dishes (we don't use paper so this is significant), hand washing and boat cleaning. We don't skimp because we are coastal cruisers. We could do with less if we had to.

After having lived on mine with the missus and two small dogs the past few months I couldn't agree more.
We've looked at neighbours boats that are much bigger in length but don't have any more liveable space or storage. If I were to upgrade, I would be looking for around 40 feet to justify the change.
She also sails very well and easily and with the bow mod I have she points as close as any other boat. Plus with no diesel engine taking up space I have tons more room for tools and other crap I never knew I needed.

Re: What is the best small sailboat to live on and cruise?

floridajoe,
Contact Rakuflames and see if she has some time to help you locate some local boats to look at. She does give sailing instruction I believe and if you should need some you can have her give you a hand. Or contact Jason(head honcho) at Sailmonsters.com and their band of merry men and women sailors. There are always some sailboats for sell in their area. You could volunteer to be a part time crew on race days and weekends for experience..... Good luck on your search on a liveaboard. I think in your price range a fair to good Catalina 27 or 30 is possible. Another brand would be a Hunter 30 to look at.
