WHAT DOES URGE YOU TO SET SAILS ?

Forget people Living on the hook (are they sailors, really?) and those busy at their second rtw route.

As far as you stay in an optimal place (climate, costs, mooring safety,..-wise) what does really urge you and convince to set sails for another ground (sailing area) as you know in advance that you'll be rather ... Worse OFF ?

IS it a comfort v Adventure trade off ? Anything else?

Thanks (l have many a doubts, ..)

Re: WHAT DOES URGE YOU TO SET SAILS ?

For the short time that we were living aboard, it was really more of just a feeling. Once we spent more than a couple of weeks in one city, we just felt it was time to move on.

Re: WHAT DOES URGE YOU TO SET SAILS ?

I have spent 90% of my adult life living in dozens of foreign countries.

Staying within my own "overly comfortable" culture does not provide me with what I crave in life, the mindfulness, sense of wonder, adventure, learning experiences and connection with humanity in general.

Re: WHAT DOES URGE YOU TO SET SAILS ?

I'm 66 years old, first sailboat was a Sunfish at Boy Scout camp when I was 9. I loved it and loved it even more when I discovered the Blue Water. You asked about the Urge? Can't really say, it's just there, never goes away and gets worse the longer you're on Terra Firma. The only place I really feel at peace is at Sea.

Wanderlust..
Though to be honest.. a couple or three longish deliveries a year satisfy this nicely.. 2017 was crap..

What urged us to leave was our 2 adult, college educated kids that refused to leave the nest.

They would not, so we did. (sold the house right out from under them) And it felt great!

Cruising isn't for everyone. For most people, boats are somewhat exalted toys. Many never leave the marina, but serve as social platforms. The percentage of sailors who become full time cruisers is very small. If you prefer not to go back to where you started from, you may have a cruiser heart.

If you have a soul that gets "itchy keel" when you hang around somewhere "too long," you might be a cruiser. One feels pulled, like the bear who went over the mountain, to see what one can see. Better? Worse? not relevant at all. More, different = possibly good.....and there are many ways of finding "good", many ways of having "good." There are many ways, too, of people being in the world, and some of us like experiencing that, but if you "know" your way is "best," that would be irrelevant for you, and would have no draw.

Re: WHAT DOES URGE YOU TO SET SAILS ?

For me, it's the memory of the smile from within that always appears with the view of a new shore. There is a comfortable familiarity that develops with these new surroundings... and then, no matter how perfect, there is a longing to experience that smile again. Wanderlust? I suppose.

Side Note-
I think I was a sailor in a previous life. As a land-locked boy, my recurring nightmare was floating on a calm ocean, FAR from any shore, then noticing a barely-submerged rock formation. This oddly horrifying sight was finally realized one day with the sight of Bishop Rock on Cortes Bank. WHAT are those waves doing there?? We're in the middle of the ocean! Spooky as hell.
I digress.

Re: WHAT DOES URGE YOU TO SET SAILS ?

Fancy free sensations..poetic findings...it doesn't need to be rational, yes.

I have been spending now 4months in the Porto Grande of Syracuse (Sicily). I just miss ottreys and migrant geese in order to define it a sort of Paradise , as it is encrusted by history (city is 2750yrs old) and natural produce, climate and smiling people around.

Yet, l know l will leave by the spring... But sure, no better place for wintering on the hook or at the dock, AFAIK :-)

Syracuse is a great place to stay.. though I do prefer being on the hook there.. that marina is just to cramped for my taste.. but the old town..
Another place that presses my buttons is Alghero W Sardinia..
