Re: What Does the Name of Your Boat Say About You?

Molly B read: Ulysses, Rubyfruit Jungle, a real survivor out of nautical history and I wanted a "work boat" name for my "work boat" with her galvinized fittings and rough and tumble fishing boat pedigree.
Previously... Juno for the Roman queen of the gods.
Taurus for my ex's zodiac sign.

Great names! This is my first post, wanted to throw ours out there. It's amazing how much time is spent on finding the perfect name and then - boom- it hits you and it's perfect (for the owners at least). So we bought our Jeanneau SO 43DS and are just finishing the upgrades and such- including her new name- Exit Strategy. Fits us for after my daughter heads to college, for vacations, for running away if all goes down the drain.

We named our girl, "Dulcinea"...why, because I'm a romantic and that's how I see my wife. One should not have to dig too deep to understand the reference.

Sorta like Bashleys -

I have had two boats I named THERAPY. You don't have to go too deep to figure that one out.

A man I knew when I was younger was a real swordsman and his boats were named GIRLIE I, II and III.

A boat I chartered was named AFTIKA. Couldn't figure that one out till told -

Another
Fuc**ng
Toy
I

Afford

So many clever people out there............

'Calita.'
That's the name she came with. I have no idea what it means and couldn't care less. After all, who doesn't refer to their pride and joy as, simply, 'the boat'?

Re: What Does the Name of Your Boat Say About You?

Our boat is "Make Me Laugh" we are the 3rd owners, first owners named her. Second owners renamed, but did not do it correctly, (did not change the name on the side of the boat, only the paper name). When we got her we debated on changing the name, but decided she does indeed make me laugh. Also, makes my wife laugh.

We plan on buying a bigger boat some day, and that one will get a name fitting of the boat, something easy to say, spell and not too long. However, my wife likes Gone With The Wind, (not any shorter, and probably pretty common). We will see what happens when we get that far.

[QUOTE=lillypink; Is that an appropriate name?[/QUOTE]

I saw this one today in Singapore and i am wondering ...

"M.V Ovulation"

Is it a misprint?
Alternatively can you help me work out why this would be a good boat name ?

Agreed. If you feel the need to explain the name to people all the time, then it's too obscure. You either need to change the name, or stop explaining and just let them wonder.

The best I have seen was in Marsh Harbor, Bahamas. It was a orange 27' sloop named Pumpkin and the dinghy was named Seed.

Re: What Does the Name of Your Boat Say About You?

The original name of my boat was Bordeaux. I had people asking me if it was bad luck to change the name. I would answer that the old name was not lucky as the boat was badly damaged during Katrina. I trucked the boat to San Diego and rebuilt it.

When my wife saw the boat she thought I was crazy, when I changed the document I named the boat "Lumia" it held that name until I finished the rebuilding...5 years.

My wife is a Kiwi and I had lived their for 20 years we both have a love for the Maori people. When we splashed the boat 2 years ago we named it "Komaru" means Sun or Sail depending on its context. We where searching for a name and when I read this sentence I was very moved.

(noun) sun.
Ka tīmata i te ao e nohoia nei e tātou, ā, pā noa ki te kōmaru e whiti nei i te rangi, e ara mai nei i te ata, e torengi atu nei i te ahiahi (KO 13/11/1882:6). / It begins in the world were we live until the sun shines in the sky, rising in the morning and setting in the evening.

We named ours, Maclas. It means, "Where are you going" in a coastal BC First Nation language. We lived in the community for several years and we found it a fitting name since people ask us this all the time!
