Re: What do you guys use for mattress

Without a doubt, try the Tuffs and Needles in a box mattress, comfortable beyond belief and the cost will shock you. You can try it for 100 days to field test them. Finally a perfect boat mattress.

Re: What do you guys use for mattress

Thanks for the tip -
I suffered from sore shoulders as the 140 mm costume mattress was not much help even when I added another 50 mm of memory Aldi latex mattress underneath my boats mattress.

I just order the Forli plastic spring system for two single berths cost AUD 400 total from an agent in Australia .A Better Way To Go I’m waiting for its arrival. I will share my experiences once installed. .

We had the former on our old boat and the latter on the new one, so I can vouch for both systems.

Re: What do you guys use for mattress

There seem to be some trends floating to the surface as we've been shopping:

- Pocket coils, regular inner springs, and the Froli system seem to be about the same purposes (depth, suspension, under ventilation) with benefits ranging from lateral or transmitted movement control at one end to less hassle (as in making the bed up, accessing storage underneath, etc.).

- Some makers offer optional hinges for easier access to under storage, and likely for easier movement if the mattress needs to be temporarily schlepped out of the way for whatever reason

- Foam varies. Latex seems to be advertised as cooler than memory or other foams. And then there's degree of firmess, so even within a category (e.g., latex) there might be firm, medium, and limp ratings.

- Some offer cooler technology - e.g, and upper layer of Tencel or bamboo fabric.

- Adding all the "best" (for you) features into one mattress can cause costs to soar.

And then there are individual preferences, where some sleep hot, some sleep cool, and some are just frugal... so many opinions are based on that kind of individual preference.

Re: What do you guys use for mattress

We have queen size mattress in our 40 Tolly and had a similar problem. I went to a foam shop and bought a memory foam mattress topper which solved the problem. We like sleeping on our boat bed better than the one at home and we have an expensive mattress.
Hope this helps.

A few here have highly recommended Froli.
Looks interesting, but my shaped starboard bunk has large storage lockers underneath and I think they would be difficult to accessClick image for larger version

My point, recommend trying the mattress before you buy.

We are looking at Handcraft Matress, SeaAndShoreFabrications.com
they have many boat patterns, but you can send them yours, or visit their shop in Severna Park MD

Thanks for posting this! I called SeaAndShoreFabrications and it turns out they have a showroom in Annapolis. My wife (who is finding the V-berth uncomfortable) wants to find a mattress topper option. BTW, their website is currently offline due to service provider problems.

The real problem my wife is having is the mattress on the boat is in two pieces with the cut going fore-and-aft in the middle of the mattress. She feels no matter how she lays she senses she is rolling downhill into the gap. I have to agree, each mattress half has too much "give" so as you move to the center the half compresses. Is there any type of topper that will address that problem?

Second that. 4" foam, 2" topper and FROLI system under. Better than the bed at the house.

Try a canvass hammock slung between two posts-- no lumps or bumps.

3" memory foam with 1" stiff foam under that with Froli.
A little more foam would have been nice, but we need the extra headroom for, uh, "recreational activities".
It's still better than our Sleep Number bed at home.

Re: What do you guys use for mattress

Coleman air mattress, also serves as a float/raft and beach mattress and lighter/stiffer when moving aside to access under berth storage.

4" foam topped by 3" egg basket type foam, 1" topper works well for me.
