+1

Slats or the Froli system will make any 4-6” mattress dramatically more comfortable regardless of mattress type, with the added bonus of providing vital ventilation.

We had the former on our old boat and the latter on the new one, so I can vouch for both systems.

Re: What do you guys use for mattress

We tried toppers on or under the old cushions. We even bought a large piece of memory foam and cut it ourselves. No better. We decided we wanted the product of a professional mattress maker that could work with our needs. Now we have an 8” latex mattress from
https://boatmattress.com/ .
Fantastic. And affordable! They will send you a kit to make a template (very easy) for odd shapes like the V berth. Our centerline queen has odd little fitments at the top and rounded corners at the bottom. They will also ship it to you at home or to a nearby marina. You can discuss your firmness desires with them as they are very customer satisfaction oriented. They can also make any kind you want for home or RV ( such as inner spring). Our toy hauler trailer has a very odd sized mattress and we now have matching mattresses in home, boat and trailer.

Oh yeah, and very, very cheap. (Foam AND slats.)
Can these IKEA mattresses be cut for a v-berth? Are they solid foam?

Re: What do you guys use for mattress

I went to foam stores, finally found one that whipped out different foams to lay on and figure out which combination of foam worked best for me. It was a combination of HD foam and latex. That was pretty comfy and then I added the FROLI system below. That made it into one of the most comfortable beds I've owned. Have serious back issues and have spent thousands on land beds.

Latex is heavy. If I were to do it over again I might just skip the foam and go for straight Dunlop latex. More weigh and $$$. But I think it might be even better.

Talk to Elsie at FROLI about their product and how thick of mattress they recommend.

Re: What do you guys use for mattress

You can:

- get thicker foam (6 inch is not uncommon),
- get denser foam (you know they come in various grades),
- add EVA sheet underneath (typically karimat style trekking matres sheets).

If you are lucky to be close to a major commercial center, you will be able to find thick EVA sold by foot in sheets. Ours is 2'' thick.

The problem is, all and any foam, open or EVA, will add thermal discomfort in warm climes. A canvas saeberth is best and then all and any foam (=insulation) makes your bed hotter and less respirable. But this is a separate issue.

Good luck getting more comfort and better sleep!

Re: What do you guys use for mattress

I’m about to embark on a 2 – 3 week summer cruise and in past years by the end of similar trips I’ve been longing for my bed back home.

So I’ve just laid out £28 (sterling) for a mattress topper to put on top of the rather hard foam in the stern cabin. I am hoping it will give me comfier nights. At that price if it doesn’t, I can dispose of it and look at more custom-made options.

Re: What do you guys use for mattress

At the Annapolis Spring Boat show there were a few boat mattress companies that made custom mattresses.

My wife tried them all, the cheapest was good for me, but she fell in love with the most expensive!

My point, recommend trying the mattress before you buy.

We are looking at Handcraft Matress, SeaAndShoreFabrications.com
they have many boat patterns, but you can send them yours, or visit their shop in Severna Park MD

It's always good to share money saving plans. I always bought stock foam and cut it to fit my berths.

Re: What do you guys use for mattress

you need to check the density of the foam you have to know what to do to make it more comfortable.
pinch the 4" foam, if your fingers come together easily then you need a firm 2" layer under the 4".
I would then add a latex 1-2" topper.
Foam factory is a great place to order from, but I'm sure there are others.

The beds are not standard size.

Re: What do you guys use for mattress

Has anyone tried the Froli System? Fairly inexpensive it seems to me. They have a booth at the Annapolis Sailboat Show in the fall.

Re: What do you guys use for mattress

We took our old 4" foam v berth cushions to the "Original Matress Factory" and they made up new multi- density mattresses just like the ones for your home. Matched the angles and tapers for a good fit and just like sleeping on a mattress in your bedroom.

Price was good as well...
