Had boat in Carabelle for 3 months. Were able to walk everywhere, pushing wife in transport chair. Small town but very friendly and has essential dining and shopping. Used the inflatable to travel around also.

Don’t bother going to Panama City. There are no good marinas left over there.
If you get over to Pascagoula, there is a great marina up the Escatawpa river called River City Marina. Price for your boat would be $300/mo. Including power and water.

Call 601-502-6920 for info.

I did. 42 hours and 2 thunderstorms to anchor behind Dog Island at 2am.

Point Cadet Marina in Biloxi MS would be my recommendation. It is at the Golden Nugget Casino. Wonderful place and great staff. Everything is close except groceries. Ocean Springs for groceries is on the bus route. Very reasonable. I was in a 60' slip. Seems like $450/mo was the rate. Includes water and elect but I paid 6 mos. in advance.

Dog Island is somewhat of a landmark, it’s only accessed by plane or boat. There has been one Motel there since I was a kid, we stayed there about 15 yrs ago and it was real run down then, but it’s a place where you really can have the whole beach to yourself.

If you fly in there is a little box that they ask you to put $5 in to help pay for the costs of mowing the runway.
Place is full of old dead cars, people will pay to have the LST to bring in a car, but don’t pay to have it hauled off.
Used to be some kind of Landing craft around there that would deliver building supplies etc.

Apparently the old Motel is no more

I was just about to pull the trigger and stay there for 2 months even though I would have to pay for 3 months. Paying for 3 months but only staying for 2 looked to work out to about $500/mo. But then they told me with the $200/mo extra for "liveaboard" fee.

So it looks more attraction to stay down the coast a little at the Gulfport MS municipal marina that is same price but only required a 2 month stay. And it looks to have better docks and pump out at each slip.

Gulfport is a newly rebuilt marina it took longer to rebuild it after Katrina because it needed a complete redesign. I kept my Peterson there in the 80s and the marina was in need of major repairs then. It has first class facilities now. Also, home to the Gulfort Yacht Club if you have Reciprocity.
I would move back there but for the one draw back. The Mississippi sound is shallow and when a storm blows up and a mandatory evacuation is ordered, it is hell to move to the back bay Biloxi to go up river, if you are late to the party. I prefer the Biloxi area as well, just more in the middle of the action I guess.

You are close to good restaurants and grocery. There is Kens Hardware and Marine store within walking distance to Gulfport marina and a West Marine a short Uber away. The buses run to all the Casinos, beaches, restaurants up and down HWY 90. Not a bad stop but I'm biased. Give Shaggy's Restaurant a try in Long Beach (short bus ride) it is the original and I prefer it over the other locations. Finer dining don't miss Mary Mahoney's on Hwy 90 in Biloxi (longer bus ride). And for a real treat have lunch on the the back bay industrial canal at the Blow Fly Inn. Yep, that's the name of it! Been there for ever and the food is not bad but you have to say you ate there.

If going to New Orleans you might choose to rent a car for the 45min-1hr drive. With all the flood water from the Mississippi river, I expect Lake Pontchartrain is muddy and not at all inviting. The Gulf is seeing a lot of that muddy water too.

yes we have been thinking to just get close and leave the boat in a marina and get a timeshare place in New Orleans

Re: Western Florida/Gulf Coast Marinas

Not a personal recommendation, but I met a couple this spring that had spent a month or so this winter at Dog River Marina in Mobile and said they really liked it. If I recall they said there are lots services / amenities on site but they needed to use the courtesy car for groceries and shopping.

I have been thinking of visiting family in Alabama next fall so also looking for other suggestions along the panhandle and near Mobile.
