Re: We're on a boat!! Cept we need internet!

These units require a wireless router that you can log on to to be with in range. I've got one of their bullets and there pretty useless for the most part.

Re: We're on a boat!! Cept we need internet!

I have a alfa wifi thingy which works about 15-20% of the time on the hook.

I also have a rooted android smartphone that I tether via wifi to the netbook. Which I'm using now. Seems sprint and t-mobile will look the other way when you tether (use your phone for a data connection) as long as your not downloading movies etc.

ATT and Verizon do it too, but they want you to pay extra for the privilege of using your data minutes on a laptop... That may be changing btw with the newer plans..

Re: We're on a boat!! Cept we need internet!

Let us know what you find. Depending on where you want to cruise eventually, you'll find internet at sea to be frustrating ... and that's being kind. Ditto with sat phone and we've had both GlobalStar (with which I successfully negotiated a $2M contract for my prior life company despite several dropped calls) and Iridium. We have SailMail which is probably the most reliable reasonably priced e-mail, but not internet. Not sure what you need, but unless you have LOTS more money than we do, it's not feasible, at least unless you're willing to limit where you cruise to where you have internet. We have the Verizon 4g broadband card as well as a Verizon hot spot and that's OK as long as we're in "civilized" along shore anchorages. Good luck and if you figure out a cost-effective solution, let me know (BTW, I do not think that paying $7 a DAY for weather via Iridium sat phone is cost effective ... rather get weather for Buoyweather and NOAA via SailMail for $275 -or such- annually).
