WE, are not slaves.
Everyone who lives on land and owns a house in a nation, or locality, that charges property tax, is a slave.
In fact, you don't own land, or a home.
You rent it from the government.
Stop paying your rent, see what happens.
So i propose, the only free ones are those on boats, with no ties to land.
We can drop our anchor, fish, and live for free.
Sure, there is upkeep, and maintenance on our homes, they have such things on land too!
Are we the future?
Just here in NY, USA they raise the property tax each and every year.
Last year in my town, it was raised 5%.
Not only that but they keep raising the value of your land.
I bought my land for $28,000. its now valued at $50,000.
To put this in prospective, the land across the street that is slightly smaller then mine, sold for less then $10,000 this summer.
My land and school tax this year was well over $1500, compared to $500 when i purchased the place 5 year ago.
Biggest mistake i ever made.
All thru life i was told, buy land, the ultimate investment. What a crock.
Even in the best economy, property tax soaks up all the gain in value you may have.
So what can we as boaters learn here?
Buy a boat that you can comfortably live on, that requires low maintenance,
move aboard young, enjoy for life!
Life on land will get worse. Land tax is not going to stop going up. Neither is income tax. All we can do is be self sufficient, work for each other for goods, and do our best to survive this mess that global government has us in.
Eventually they will nuke each other to death, and we can move back to land.
/end rant.

thou i respect the coast guard, i firmly believe people have the right to be stupid and die.
If there was no coast guard that is what would happen, joe the cruiser, with piles of driftwood on deck, and an engine that does not work, and rigging made of old halyards, will end up swimming to shore.
Eventually this will happen anyway.
Money will run out.
This is another part of self sufficiency.
Do you think people would be so stupid on the water if there was no coast guard to come save them, some for the 3rd time?
i do.
they will be dead.
that is life, live and die.
and no, i don't believe we need schools. not the public funded ones anyway.

Re: WE, are not slaves.
Land is a shared resource amongst a society. How that is shared differs from country to country (and also within). But yeah, no one "owns" it.
Some places favour rationing land by money. rationing by money is still rationing......on property, food, healthcare or whatever.
Over here the property tax (we still have rates!), is around £400 a year, on a 3 bed semi (in US terms would be called a walkin closet in size! - albeit over here a mid range family home) - worth IRO £400k / USD600k (off a bit in recent years)...........European Socialism gone mad!
But likely would be higher if we had an armed forces 12 times the size of sanity........Capitalism gone mad!
On the upside, I don't get to pay for da gubberment to check I am pooping correctly.......sometimes it's really hard to feel free .

Re: WE, are not slaves.
WOW, here in NY you would pay $18,000-30,000 a year in taxes on such a house.
based on value

Technically correct I suppose but in the main, I tell you to bugga off "my land" and have the support of the local constabulary while doing so and I can either keep it or sell it at my whim so it feels like I own it..........
Maybe the OP should go boating for week or so!

Once upon a time your military would have been big enough to do that - but the world has moved on. Would need a military 100 times bigger and you can't afford the one you already have (no insult meant by that - just how it is)....and lack the resolve to take the cheaper route - of up to and including the Carthage solution (if the Romans had not permanently solved that problem long ago we would likely also be having "The War on Elephants" ).

Re: WE, are not slaves.
You cannot insult me with truth.
Our government is broke.
Things will fall apart eventually.
That was a key argument for getting a world traveling boat.
So when it gets very bad here, i move.
And it will.
I am not a futurologist, so i cannot give you a year, but it will happen, as surely as the sun will rise, so shall America fall.

I like the story of the fella (in England) who pitched his tent on some land and the Lord of the Manor turned up in a Range Rover and confronted him.
Range Rover man: “Hey you. What do you think you are doing?”
Tent man: “Just pitching my tent and having lunch. Beautiful here isn’t it?”
RR man: “You can't stop here.”
Tent man: “Why not?”
RR man: “It’s my land and I say you can’t stop here.”
Tent man: “Your land? Mmm. How did you come by it?”
RR man: “My father left it to me. and his father before him. We have owned this land for generations.”
Tent man: “I see. And how many generations?”
RR man: “It has been in the family as long as records go back. Now leave; this is my land and you cannot stay here.”
Tent man: “And how did your original ancestor get the land?”
RR man: “he fought for it and won.”
Tent man: “Ok, that sounds a reasonable way to have acquired the land .........I'll fight you for it". .

Really? You are restricted in where you can anchor by Federal, state and local laws. Free? Only if you can find an 'open' anchorage unaffected by restrictions. Then, you have to choose from what's left depending on it's exposure to the weather and passing traffic. Can't find one convenient enough, your only choice may be to pay for a mooring or marina slip. Oh, how fun!
Depending on where you fish you'll probably have to buy a license.
Live for free? Unless you can eat without having to buy food, get past registration requirements on your boat that require a fee, manage to get around on land without owning a car or using mass transit which ain't free, blah, blah, blah.
Low maintenance boat? Ha!
