Wanted: Liveaboard in Santa Barbara, CA

I am being assigned a project in Santa Barbara and have always wanted to try a liveaboard situation.

Currently living in Downtown LA. Project is 18 months may have another project that follows in Ventura.

If anyone knows of someone looking to rent, I would love to hear from them.

So...I've been looking and seems like people may want more information.

I would leave the boat at the dock would not take it out.

I'm 48 y/o professional female -- consultant

Experienced with boats, have sailed as crew and have many friends into sailing member of a yacht club in CA.

Know how to do boat maintenance, very handy and very tidy

I'd give craigslist a shot. The facts that you are a 48 yr old professional female are in your favor, as opposed to a stoned 18 year old surfer boy, for instance.
Also you'll probably need to walk the docks. There are many bulletin boards in the SB Harbor, posting ads on them will probably work.

Some marinas don't allow "sub leases", which is how our marina view a situation like this. There are also restrictions on how many liveaboards are allowed in some areas. Doable, but just be aware of what the renter might be up against. Even if you supply the boat, there are restrictions. If you do try Craigslist, you'll find other people with the same idea. Suggestion. Also look in Ventura.

I have looked at craigslist and the only houseboat situations are Marina Del Rey.

I did not think of the possibility of the limitations of a sublet.

I will go walk the docks next weekend. I drove the local area this weekend.

A "house boat" is a different animal from most livaboard situations. If you're truely looking for a houseboat, you are severly limiting your search. Hope this does not sound like I'm hung up on semantics. I've seen true houseboats in Marina Del Rey, but lots of liveaboards are living on sailboats and powerboats which, if you called them a "houseboat", you'd get a funny look, to say the least.

Minggat I agree, I should be careful stating "houseboat". I'm looking for a liveaboard in the form of a sail or motorboat (prefer sail as this is most likely what I will eventually purchase).

I figure I can give it a try and see if I like the accomodations. I have spent many a night onboard and love it.

Thank you all for having me do additional homework. I have found out if you do not stay more than 3 days per week and an additional 60 vacation days per year you do not need a liveaboard permit. I plan on being in SB a few days during the week an occassional weekends. Yeah!!! Search may have gotten easier. Will head to SB docks to post my request this coming weekend and peek in on the Saturday races. Who knows, in this economy for a person that wants to sail during the weekends and offset their costs, I'm a good solution
