Wannabe Liveaboard

Hi!

I'm a wanna be liveaboard in the SF bay area, and I'm looking for boat recommendations.

I come from a racing background and would actually like to take my boat out, so I'm looking for something that performs fairly well. I don't mean that it has to be fast (although I would like it, I don't think its an option at my desired price point) but that is fun to sail and is easy to handle.

I'm looking for something in the 35-40 range, most places I've been looking at slips don't allow liveaboards on less than 35ft.

My budget is up to 40k, but I'd prefer to be around 30k mark or lower.

Additionally, while I don't mind doing some work (I'm pretty sure you have to enjoy it to some extent to want to live on a boat), I'm not looking for a project boat.

The two boats that are currently my front runners are older Catalina 36s and Islander Freeport 36.

I know I have a lot of wants on this list that might not all be possible.

I'd really appreciate any recommendations from people with more experience than me, as well as any recommendations for things to look out for/be aware of that I might be missing.

Thanks for your help!

Re: Wannabe Liveaboard

San Diego here, so perhaps not suited for the higher winds, but around here the Catalina 34s are quite popular both as liveaboards and our racing series.

In the end, what we did was to spend a lot of time on yachtworld.com and broker sites, learning about all kinds of smaller run boats that we may not have considered if we had depended on what is popular, common, or well known to the general public.

The Mariner 36 we saw was beautiful, if only they had been willing to negotiate!

I crewed on an ericson 35 out of richmond that would have made a nice liveaboard. It do too bad in the beercan races either

I think you could buy a Morgan 382 and probably get it's slip in downtown San Rafael for about what you want to spend.

WADR, your question is like asking your mother what girl you should marry before you've had a first date.

Latitude 38 is a free magazine available at chandleries all over the Bay area, with tons of ads and for sale boats. They also have a website.

There are many quality boats in your range, and the Catalina 36 and the Islander and those two could almost not be further apart.

I wish you well, and hope you enjoy looking. Boat hunting is always great fun.
