| Unusual High Tides - Folly Island
Were visiting Folly island and have been experiencing high tides that the locals say have never happened in their lifetimes. Daily we've been getting flood alerts on weather broadcasts. City marina and low areas underwater. Large reed islands floating up and down rivers filling up slips in marinas and covering beaches. ?worldwide phenomena? Anyone out there have stories about this occurence? Were in s carolina usa. Steve |

Spring tides are especially strong tides (they do not have anything to do with the season Spring), that occur when the Earth, the Sun, and the Moon are in a line. The gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun both contribute to the tides. Spring tides occur during the full moon and the new moon. The Proxigean Spring Tide is a rare, unusually high tide, which occurs when the moon is both unusually close to the Earth (at its closest perigee, called the proxigee) and in the New Moon phase (when the Moon is between the Sun and the Earth). The proxigean spring tide occurs at most once every 1.5 years. We had a new moon on June 22/09. Because of the complex dynamics of the Earth's oceans, their inertia, friction with the ocean floor, internal viscosity and the distribution of the continents, the maximum tides do not always coincide with the optimal times of proxigee.

This month, the moon is exceptionally close to the earth, and therefore exerting a greater pull on the tides

Tide tonight in Avonmouth UK is 43 ft, when it goes out in the Bristol Channel the beach front is 1/2 miles from the water.

You can find tide information at NOAA Tides and Currents - Home - Here you will be able to find both the predicted high tide and the actual high tide observed. We are having unusually high tides but that's what they predicted. Nothing that was not expected. |

On one particularly high tide a swarm of grasshoppers and small green flies descended on the area. Boats were alive with a crawling mass. There were birds nests complete with chicks and eggs floating n the debris. Too bad they couldn't read the predicted tides. A local marina owner estimated it was going to cost 10k to get all the debris and junk removed

| Huge tides here in Beaufort, NC, as well.....had to walk up to the floating docks. Beach eroision is huge.... the end of the handicap ramp at Fort Macon Beach is 5 feet above the ground, due to the sand wash out....that sand is now in the inlet!!!! On top on the moon position, we get wind tides. We are in between Core and Bogue Sounds and the wind will drive the water into Taylor Creek and flood Front Street in Beaufort. Wind has shifted, should be back to normal today.....except for the trash....... ![]() fred

The Proxigean Tide occurs when the Moon is at its closest point in its orbit to the Earth and in its New or Full Moon phase. At these times, its tidal effect on the Earth is maximum. Tidal gravitational forces vary as the third power of the distance between Earth and Moon, so even a small difference in distance can translate into a big effect. The orbit of the moon varies from a distance of 356,500 to 406,700 kilometers with an average distance near 380,000 kilometers. The variation between the maximum and minimum distances results in tidal force changes of a factor of 1.2 times the average tidal forces. The tidal influence is greatest during a New Moon, because both the Sun and the Moon are on the same side of the Earth. Here is a partial list of some of the most extreme Proxigean Tides, based on the time between perigee (closest to Earth) and syzygy (either sun-Earth-moon, which is a full moon, or a new moon alignment of sun-moon-Earth) being less than 5 hours. Date - Moon Phase 1/30/2010 - Full 3/19/2011 - Full 5/6/2012 - Full 6/23/2013 - - Full 8/10/2014 - Full 9/28/2015 - Full 11/14/2016 - Full 5/25/2017 - New 1/2/2018 - Full 7/13/2018 - New 8/30/2019 - New 10/16/2020 - New 12/4/2021 - New 1/21/2023 - New Lunar Perigee and Apogee Calculator: ➥ http://www.fourmilab.ch/earthview/pacalc.html
