University Project

Start my final year at University in September and I am hoping to get some help in here for it!

I decided to do a project instead of a dissertation (not the greatest of writers lol) and my project must be based on the subject (Web systems development)

Looking at various options, I decided that I would create an iPhone/iPad app that would help make a liveaboards life that little bit easier. This is why I have placed this in the liveaboard thread

So I ask this question to all you liveaboards.....if you had an iPhone/iPad, what features would you like to see in an application?

I appreciate your time in helping me complete my project.

Tony

FaceBoat - every boater I know has a boat card. We exchange them and I put them into a drawer making them totally impossible to sort, find, or reference at any time in the future. Give me a way to exchange "digital boat cards" and keep in touch with my friends that I've met through my boating adventures.

ActiveLiveAboard - use ActiveCaptain's liveaboard field for every marina in the world to present a map of liveaboard friendly locations. Provide a way for users to add to the data, add reviews, etc. There is another iPhone app that uses all of ActiveCaptain's data but nothing that concentrates just on the liveaboard items and allows updates to be done on the iPhone.

The best ideas will come by starting with something big and non-boating relating and figuring out how to make it tailored and specific to your target market.

I would like an affordable celestial navigation package with the Nautical Almanac embedded in the application. The application would also compute star sites, noon sites, planetary sites. Similar to what was found on the old Celesticomp handheld navigational calculator.

I would be willing to pay (in the $10 USD range) for an app that would give me a slip map of every marina in my area (US West Coast?). That way, if I'm pulling in to XYZ Harbor, and the Harbormaster tells me over VHF that I'm being given slip C 34, I can look at the app and know on which side I should rig my fenders. And I'd like it to tell me where the fuel dock, pump out, et cetera in that marina can be found.

Bash, these are good ideas for future but as this is a project for my degree, it is time based and I dont know if I have the time to be able to list all the slips on the West coast. What makes it more difficult is that I am based in the UK!

Nor would I have time to chart the stars maxingout

The project has to be simple, but big enough to build a University degree around. And as it is for University, I would then aim to make the app free for iPhone/iPad users

I like the social networking idea, it could incorporate business skills so if you are in a marina and your sail is torn, it would show you if anyone is close who could repair it for you

Cool. Are you at the University of Liverpool? If so, how about a free app that helps recreational boaters calculate their on-water carbon footprints? Figure in the displacement, nautical miles traveled per annum, type of propulsion, means of charging batteries, et cetera. Extra credit for those of us who have installed LED lighting, solar panels....

Something along the lines of "how green is your boat?"

There might even be some grant money available to help develop that sort of app.

I'm not familiar with Edge Hill. But, as a university professor who has done a fair amount of teaching in the UK, I'd recommend asking around to see whether there's someone outside of Web Systems Development who could help support your research. Maybe someone in Environmental Science?

If so, it could be a cool project. I've had students work on similar calculators unrelated to boating, and the complexities are huge. It's the sort of thing that might impress a prospective employer once you've nailed down your diploma.

I may look into this as an additional feature to the program, maybe offer a free version of the app and a paid version, with the paid version allowing chat (maybe) and the calculator?
