UBNT Bullet Boondoggles

Short version: Had a working commercial system that got broken or wet or both. Went to hotspot which is great but $$$ so bought a Titanium bullet and tried to tuck it into my comm'l system.

Current prob is that I can't get into the bullet from the laptop. After MANY attempts by me and other "experts" to log onto the bullet to do the setup, last night I ran the UBNT discovery app which indicated the bullet's IP is 192.168.10.1, not 1.20 per "instructions." This after a full power reset.

Go into my adapter settings (Win 7) and set the address in default gateway and pref DNS to the 10.1 address. SubNet is 255... Then set static IP at 192.168.10.21 (and have tried many other addresses).

Nutin so far. My laptop "sees" the bullet as an unidentified network but I can't get in to start config on the bullet itself.

Any thoughts? I've been going to the library to watch all the how to vids and have learned a lot but not quite enuff it seems.

Re: UBNT Bullet Boondoggles

You say "full power reset", did you hold down the little reset button for >5 sec while the bullet is powered on? Just turning off the power will not reset the bullet. The pic is for an older bullet, but yours should have that too.

the 192.168.10.1 is a fallback IP when the bullet is configured as a SOHO router and has been waiting and timed out to get a IP from an DHCP server on the network.

is your UBNT connected directly to your laptop or your router ?

Re: UBNT Bullet Boondoggles

also, when resetting, instructions say to let the Bullet set, powered up, for five minutes. Or something like that.

Here is the Nanostation beginner's guide. I used it with my Picostation, and it probably applies to a great many Ubiquiti devices.

My reset looks like pic posted. I held it down for a minute with power on.

I had printed the Beginner's guide previously and have it in my hot little hand at the moment. This is the titanium model so it doesn't have the diagnostic LEDs.

I don't mind learning new stuff but this is a puzzle.

That sure looked helpful. esp: Click “Obtain an IP address automatically” and “Obtain DNS server address automatically” buttons. I don’t know why some instructions call for using specific IP address, it prevents communication with the Bullet.

... but no.

I don't have a router. The bullet/ant goes to the POE, then over to computer via blue LAN cable.

I'd give up on this but I have access to two "free" APs. One cost a small bouquet of flowers.

Re: UBNT Bullet Boondoggles

I think older Ubiquiti devices required the static IP. That is how I had to set my Picostation up. It seems that yours, and perhaps newer models, omit that step.

My Picostation sure is finicky though and it will connect to any station, except the one I want. So apparently I have to configure the AP to match the Picostation. No ideal for cruising when a person may have several different APs they will need to connect to over time and space.

I've had good luck with my $80 super antenna though. It isn't picky and didn't require any configuration or software for that matter.

Here is my high - tech Super Antenna setup. It's the one in the ziplock bag. I don't know exactly what the other antenna is.

I am not clear if you did this before or after my post. Does the UBNT discovery tool find it with a different IP now?

I also have some excellent PDF instructions that goes step by step through the setup of the bullet, but they're too large to attach here (just over 700 kB). If you want to PM me an email address, I'll send it to you.

Yes, I had done it earlier.

Not an expert but you do need to make sure that your computers Ethernet port is configured for the same subnet as the Ubiquity device.

Yep. Thanks. You get a warning when it's not set that way. Ask me how I know.

Many folks comment on how puzzling the setup CAN BE, even on the nerdier forums. There's just a few places for actual number inputs but many small clicks along the way. Whatever is incorrect is a small thing I think. My savvy buddy who has set up a marina wifi system wasn't able to do any better than I have.

Re: UBNT Bullet Boondoggles

While its possible the bullet is fubar'd, it'd be worthwhile to try a new/different POE injector. The power supply could be faulty.

Test/replace your patch cables as well.

And try to access with a different browser.
