Re: Two Trash Cans a Week - Still May not be enough

I don't know how i missed this thread...We had our second garage sale two weeks ago and then i donated 3 truckloads of "crap" to goodwill. Our house looks pretty good as far as clutter (it's all gone) I'm on to selling the entertainment center, tv's, my huge rollaway tool box ect... House goes on the market next week, (avg time on market in my hood is 18 days) so hopefully i'm out by febuary-march! then i have to quit my Job! (six figures) That will be painful!

As a real estate broker, the worst case of "junk removal" was my last sale which was a 1900 ft. home. After some of the owners moved out, ( one stayed for a while) we removed four- 40 cu yd containers of junk and old furniture (everything crushed flat) . That's 160 cubic yards ! There was still some left!!

I don't know about others, but we just have a house big enough to hold it. With 3 teen-agers growing up, and a father that isn't much better, we accumulate stuff and just never throw it away or sell it because we have room.

All the stuff I've been cleaning out of my house was 'fairly' neatly organized in our large storage room in the basement or the garage. I usually keep boxes for electronics until they run out of warranty (90 days), but why go clear out old boxes when there are other fun things to do.

So for us, we just had the room. Now that we are looking to sell, we have a reason to go thru it all.

Let's face it, easy to accumulate stuff. I don't think for many of us it has anything to do with security. It's just hard to throw good stuff away, and too much trouble to sell it. How many live aboards have a some tools they never use aboard? many. But we know we will need it within a few weeks of tossing it out!

Oh, Cheekako,

That struck a chord with me: I grew up hearing this proverb, "he who saves, finds." A program for a pack rat mentality for sure.

So, Hudson, why? some of us are pre-programmed hoarders; some buy into the culture of having stuff that friends have because it's cool; or a contemporary fad--each year's Christmas kitchen offerings, for instance; ultimately because the false notion of a forever expanding economy is not something we fight.
