Re: Toilet Paper!

Back before I had my own boat, when I did that hell of an expensive RYA course over four days, the first thing the skipper told us on his training sloop was 'nothing' goes down the head that was not eaten. Toilet paper had to be put in a side bin. It came with the threat, if you block it you fix it.

Not knowing, I asked if that was normal if boat heads. After all I was on the course in prep for buying my own boat. He told me most marine heads can't take toilet paper, and even though this one was electric and had a macerator he said it's worth $900 and is one if the best. I remember thinking to myself, there has to be a better way than this.

After two days one of us five students blocked it up with toilet paper. Out came the tongs and we all had a laugh that he got caught.

When I got my own boat I asked about toilet paper and the owner told me he'd never heard of 'bagging' it and he'd only experienced a few blockages when someone has used too much. So after buying that boat, with its cheap Jabsco toilet I used it for the first year without a single blockage. I then replaced it when I renovated with the larger bowl Jabsco and three years later I still haven't had a blockage with common supermarket toilet paper. 'Soft' toilet paper. No such thing as sand paper on my boat.

I don't understand why anyone puts up with a toilet you have to bag shitty paper with. Just not necessary.

Hey, at least I'm no longer a marathon runner! Those guys and girls sometimes skip the whole toilet thing all together and "go on the go," so to speak.

Re: Toilet Paper!

I use the "burrito" method... Before sitting down to doo the deed have your favorite double ply toilet paper (Charmin), a package of wet wipes and a double paper towel laid on a flat surface all ready to go. When you are ready wipe as usual and fold the paper with the brown racing stripe on itself and lay in on the paper towel. When the major hazardous material has been removed move to the wet wipes for final cleaning. After using each wet wipe fold and stack on the other clean up effort in the paper towel. Feel free to wet wipe until all residue from the "moving" experience have been removed. Now roll up the paper towel as if making a burrito (or rolling a cigarette) making sure to fold the ends inside the roll. These burritos can be placed in a zip lock and after acculmating 6 or so the zip lock can be added to your trash... 15 years 4 different heads and never a clog!

Re: Toilet Paper!

I think that plumbing is more of a factor than paper.

Examples:

My current boat, on which we use TP normally with no rituals, has not had a clog in 14 years now. Hoses changed once. But, the run to discharge is very short and simple...easy to pump clear.

By contrast, a Lagoon 50 I used to captain had a gravity dump holding tank (higher than the head so pumping uphill) and then an absurdly long, basically level, run from the tank to discharge. Impossible to pump clear so constant problems. We used lots of high pressure water to flush the system clear between charters...only way to reduce clogs.

Belizesailor makes a very important point. I have an approximate four foot level run from my head to holding tank.

Re: Toilet Paper!

We use quilted Northern in our electric Raritan Sea Era and never have a problem. It has a built in macerator so once through the bowl, it's ground almost to a liquid. We use Odorlos in our tank and when we leave for the weekend, put in the bowl, so first flush of the next weekend is Odorlos down the line. That helps further degrade into liquid.

Our factory installed Jabsco pump model had a couple of clogs using the standard marine stuff and that's why we changed to the Sea Era 11 years and 831 days on the boat ago with no issues.

Re: Toilet Paper!

Madwand,

If you use a kitchen hand spray like for washing dishes on the pressure water in your shower (assuming you have a pressurized shower water source), instead of a normal shower head, it could easily be used for the purpose discussed above, there certainly is more than adequate pressure. Using one saves water, because the water flows only when you push the lever, and it automatically releases.

As for drying off, one's bath towel would be suitable, once one was clean. Or one could air dry. Probably less fun in winter than summer.
