I'm trying to decide wether to have sheets made to measure or just try and adapt ready made ones any suggestions? Plus is there a fabric which is better than others for beds? Thanks Elaine

+1 . Elaine, as usual Dirk is right.

The higher the thread count per square inch, the more luxurious the feel. Egyptian cotton is generally woven with a high thread count.

Anything over 400 count in a single ply is reasonable but I can report 1000-1200 ensures the sweetest dreams . Absolutely bargain prices usually mean you are getting a multiple ply (not as good) - in general you pay for what you get.

I have found it is less expensive to buy ready made flat sheets (particularly as you can often pick them up on special) and then recut them to fit the mattresses you have on board. Fabric bought by the metre is often not wide enough for larger mattresses, so buying sheets avoids joins.

I've found it less painful to buy ready made flat sheets -- for example, a king size flat for a queen size bed -- and use them as is. No need for fitting.

This thread includes a diagram for adapting store-bought sheets to fit a v-berth: http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ets-59599.html We made our own, modifying the instructions to fit our circumstances, Life Afloat Archives: Square Peg, Round Hole, and having custom sheets truly does make it easier to make the bed.

Ours are Egyptian cotton, as the previous posters have suggested. Counterintuitively, I've also read that fleece can be cooling in the tropics if it allows air flow underneath you. (Haven't tried this yet!)

Flat sheets can be folded to fit anything and are easily replaced.

Pet Peeve from charter days: no fitted sheets allowed aboard or in bodega inventory...just complicates things.
