Sounds like a very good idea which I'll try.

Yes it is household cleaning powder which is used to clean difficult dirt on kitchen, bathroom surface. In Europe it is kbow as VIM I don't know US? Do try it I got results with it. I also initially many years ago used the special SS cleaning protecting commercial products at freat cost. I use toothbrush in hard to reach areas, around bolts, inside trunbuckles...

Thanks I will try it. I can imagine how it works. There are other products which as you say are expensive. One is sold in NZ as Emergel Grunt. I used to use it occasionally when it was called simply Emergel. At that time a medical doctor / yachtsman friend told me it contained Oxalic acid in sufficient concentration to "kill you before it reaches your stomach" if you swallowed some. It did work magic but the cost and his warning put me off using it.

The truth is the doctor was flat out wrong. It is in most green leafy vegies people eat and a high concentration is excreted in urine. But it is also known to increase the risk and formation of kidney stones
Oxalic-Acid Information read the truth here

You don't take it up through the skin. Just wash it off your hands with water when you are ready and wait biting your nails till after that ;-)

ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT YACHT: SONAR, FISHFINDER: Many liveaboards and experienced boat pilots/navigators will mot mention GPS as most important electronic equipment on a boat. They will mention sonar or depth instrument. I tend to agree and have two fixed ones of different make. athen I also keep a Lowrance which works with stick on sounder, is black and white, works on 12V of boat or battery pack. It helps sound reefs, channels from your dinghy before heading in with your mothership.

VIM is a slightly abbrassive liquid cleaner that is great on decks. It comes in 3 flavours...regular, with bleach, and dolphin. The bleach version really gets decks shiny white. The dolphin version is supposedly environmentally friendly, which is nice for places where your sailboat is floating in your drinking water supply...freshwater lakes.

The main feature of VIM is that it is very cheap. I get mine at the dollar store.

I disagree with the reply that VIM = Comet powder, since VIM is a thick liquid. I can't imagine sprinkling COMET on my decks. IMHO, Comet is toilet cleaner. My boat is not a toilet...well...IMHO.

In conclusion, I love VIM.

Around here VIM is a liquid...a thick liquid sold in a "squirt" type bottle. The liquid is thick and slightly abrasive, but does not scratch. Its also very cheap. Great on decks and most tough cleaning jobs.

I love VIM.

Sounds like making Vista car wax when it was good but maybe slightly more abrasive. Not the blue crap though came out with.

Yes Oxalic acid is in lots of food such as rhubarb ( the leaves of which are poisonous) It is the concentration that makes a difference. I won't challenge you to take a mouthful of the stuff. I don't want to be held liable for 3rd degree manslaughter. The doctor concerned was head of a large hospital emergency department at the time. Are you a medical doctor? Or are you simply qualified to do Internet research?
