Re: Superstitions :-) :-(

Leaving on a Friday. Had enough bad luck with that one that I might believe it, but then again had bad luck after leaving pretty much any other day of the week

Whistling brings wind. Usually too much.

Sticking a knife in the mast brings wind. Usually too much. (although I have also seen that sticking a knife in the mast is similar to stepping it on a coin and brings luck, so which do you want to believe?).

Re: Superstitions :-) :-(

It is a little known fact that the Bermuda Triangle used to be called the Bermuda Rectangle.

Until one side mysteriously disappeared.

Re: Superstitions :-) :-(

Don't make pea soup or you'll bring fog. I've had skippers toss the whole pot overboard.

The coin under the mast is to pay Charon to cross the river Styx if you die at sea.

If you whistle it'll bring a wind, but only the skipper is allowed to do it. Anyone else brings ill winds.

yes, if you "pee soup" you've spent far to long in a rough port!

On ships only the bosun may whistle... the master is not exempt

I know its bad luck to have a woman aboard. Especially if it is not the one you're married to

And then there's the obvious matter of bringing or allowing women on a boat. At all. Any other elephants in the room?

Not believing in any of these superstitions has been lucky for me!
