Solid Fuel Heaters

I have read that with the Dickenson sold fuel heater it is possible to use charcoal. Any recommendations on brand or type? I have heard that some of the instant light charcoals can be dangerous.

We have a Roughwater 41 and will be cruising the Loop starting November 2010.

I'm sure charcoal is good but I think it absorbs moisture like a sponge. that could be the problem with it. How about actual coal? Possibly that would be too hot. All coal fires do output gas so good venting is a must.
