Skype and Whatsapp in Europe

Hi looking to cruise to europe next year for about a year.are childrem are in canada and uk and currently keep in touch via skype and whatsapp whilst on land.
Has any one else used these and had problems or is there a better or more cost effective way

Skype to Skype is free no matter if they are in USA and you are in vietnam. If you have internet.

Skype is free when you use a free wifi hotspot. How can you get more cost effective?

The one all the "young" kids are using here in the US is Viber. I used it and it's very functional. And of course free.

My daughter just returned from a year in Europe and Africa,she took a unlocked i phone and we' facetimed' whenever she had wi fi. Worked fine. Also I could ask my Mac, 'wheres my i phone', and up comes a google earth map with a green dot for location. I am computer neanderthal,but it was OK for me.
Also,as she took photos,they went to 'the cloud' then to me at home.

I do business globally and Skype to Skype almost daily to all over Europe and South America. As long as both ends have a reasonable connection it works great.

A few years ago my daughter went to Nepal on a study program and worked perfectly from there, well anytime she could get a connection.

Sounds promising!! Have used in main cities before but not sure on french canals and coastal ports along the way ,west cost italy round to greece
