Re: Sizing up for Hopping Ponds

A 27 foot at sea seems very small.... and very much "in the water" as opposed to "on the water". realistically it's a mental thing.
Try heading out to sea in yours for 1-2 days and then back for a total of 4 days or so and you may get an idea where you fall. Unless you have perfect lake water conditions!
Not sure I could live with the speed of a 27 footer on long passages, but that's another question!

Re: Sizing up for Hopping Ponds

With the assumption that you are buying used I would say get one that you can afford to replace all the standing rigging on as part of the purchase. You can buy a nice blue water boat but get out there and start getting pounded with old rigging...............

Re: Sizing up for Hopping Ponds

Somewhere between 3 and 5 tons displacement per crew member should about do it for monohulls.

Re: Sizing up for Hopping Ponds

Consider this: The Pardeys made a survey between boat owners and the rough result was that "short term sailors, like 2 years and then back to the rat race, have boats of 35-45 feet, long term sailors or live aboards have mostly boats 24-29 feet. Their own boat was 24 for long years and 29 until the end of the travels.

Re: Sizing up for Hopping Ponds

My first keel boat was a 25 foot Vertue... a brilliant go anywhere boat.. I planned to go from Aus to Chile in her but realised she was just too small.. she could do it but......

So my current boat is 39 foot and she fits like a glove... good with up to four but also easily single handed.

If I bought a new boat she would be smaller rather than larger...

Ummm... either those numbers are wrong or this was in 1972. Not too many long time cruisers on boats under 35 to 40 feet.

Yeah, old data I think. In the mid 80's my buddy cruisers in Mexico were on Falmouth 22, Dana 24, Westsail 32, my 30 foot Rawson.
In late 90's in the Caribe 48, 47, 42 Cat, 40 etc
