- - And most currently even the technique of making the motors look old doesn't work. Last year when my brand new Yamaha was stolen while hanging from a halyard; two other motors were stolen from dinghy's in the water and both were 10 years old and looked like it. And just last month another friend here in Grenada has his 15 year old Evinrude 15hp stolen just after he had spent $200 getting it repaired. The situation with the drug trade and lack of employment has - as I mentioned - turned the thieves into "equal opportunity" - your new motor; your neighbors old motor; even their "brother" fisherman's motor are all getting taken.
- - Maybe it is time for someone to invent a simple "inboard" motor for a dinghy . . .

problem is, when we visit other places , places in which there is a median income of, say , 7-50 dollars per year and show off our shiny new big richie rich boat then complain about how much was stolen--that doesnt make sense to me, somehow--there is something missing there. i think the missing thing is common sense. it doesnt take much of that to realize these folks arent in the same position we are--seems to me is a lot like having the 3 yr old with a face full of food play with the pit bull then wonder why the kid gets a dog bite. sorry, is just an observation.

Oh goodie! I get to show my Caught Red Handed Robbery photo!

We had this custom made by a security door makers grandfather.

We can use it while we are at home too! Just remember those folks that have been robbed whilst onboard! In the tropics this door still alows the cool air to come through while we are snug as a safe 'lil bug below

Sometimes it makes me cringe when I look around the deck and see how much $$ is there, easily pinched. From cockpit instruments to blocks to sails to halyards, every sailboat probably has a couple grand just laying about.

I suppose that people who know enough about sailing yachts to make effective thieves, generally aren't. Power boats on the other hand...

That is sad and scary. And mean. Imagine being locked up in your own boat...

But yet... maybe we should have one made....

At 'home' in the city don't we all lock the door before we go to bed?

We don't live like that, but in less secure areas we can.

Its standard mesh they use in security screen doors (the fly wire screen is removed). There are extra pop rivets along all the edges to make sure the mesh can't be kicked out of the frame. In the photo you can see the 4 corners are reinforced and have pop rivets ever few cms too.

It was weird because a few shops wouldn't do anything but a square or rectangular shape. The shop I had it done would only do it because the owners father or gandfather was sitting around doing nothing.
I took the 2 companionway pannels in as a template. The job cost me $50 and it was money well spent! The only time we use the old companionway door is it its raining and we are at sea with a following wind as the rain goes in..
Best $50 we've spent.

When a boat has all aluminium hatches , locked from inside thru a port, or vent, and the ports are to small for anyone to get thru , it takes hours of serious work and serious tools for a thief to get inside a boat. The boat next door would almost always be easier.

there is, for all the challenges, something to be said for a big ole dog.

Living in Panama I left my rabbit convertible parked everywhere, with the top down and no one EVER messed with it. Ever.

That MIGHT have been cause of the big red dog parked on top of the boot... watchin the world go by, waiting fer me to re appear from where ever I was...

This isn't a place to go into the rightness or wrongness of dogs aboard. m just sayin...

no one will be messin with a dink that Cara the Wonderdog is sittin in...

Some sort of alarm? Something that will beep your cell phone or beeper notifying that something is going on. Maybe if you are not to far from the boat you could run back and do whatever you can. maybe a nice big bright light on the mast somewhere that illuminates the deck for a couple of minutes when the alarm goes off to scare the bastards away???

We are a professional young couple (ages 31 & 29, carpenter & filmmaker) with internet business looking for an opportunity to get experience living aboard a yacht in exchange for boat minding and general cleaning and maintenance. Ideally we would like the opportunity from now until December as we are working in the Solomon Islands January - March.

We eventually will get our own yacht to live aboard and are wanting to see if this is for us.

We have been living in a small space (our campervan) for the last 4 months while traveling around Queensland.
