Something to note on this subject. In a recent conversation with another live aboard, apparently shore line management has gotten a bit stricter, IE it is costing marina owners more for just about everything including live aboards. I don't know if this is just Seattle or king co or wa state. So don't be surprised to see changes or a dialog about if you are in the area. My understanding is its mostly ins related. Our manager has always been very straight forward.

Re: Seattle/San Juan Islands area liveaboards

Funny how a bad taste sticks with you after a poor experience. Seattle remains one of our least attractive places to visit either on or off the water. We ended up living in a flat in Kirkland for a couple of years after being shut down on trying to move our DeFever 54 from San Diego to somewhere close to Seattle. I spent my formative years cruising the area in the 50's, 60's and 70's so knew the area pretty well before trying to locate a liveaboard marina. The surrounding areas in the San Juans or even inland if you are driving are much more inviting to us. Phil

There are many marinas a short (45 min) ferry ride from Seattle, walking on the ferry or bicycle is a good way to go no lines. Good luck. Remember your gore tex and fleece

Re: Seattle/San Juan Islands area liveaboards

We love the area and even though we are newbies with no experience people have gone out of their way to help us. Our boat is in a beautiful Marina in the Hood Canal. It is a short commute to the ferry that goes right to downtown Seattle. The Marina is friendly and welcoming to liveaboards, the manager was actually a liveaboard herself for many years. There are a number of slips available. When we were looking for a home Marina we had no issues. The link posted above is an excellent resource.

Awesome tip! I'm on the hunt for great live aboard marinas. You said in Hood Canal. Where at exactly? Which bay? What's the name of the marina?

Chris, our boat is located in Pleasant Harbor Marina in Brinnon Washington. It is a small Marina and it doesn't have haul out capabilities, the nearest is Port Townsend. They have a website and have their amenities and charges posted. We like it so much because of it's protection, the people and it is off the beaten path.

Chris,

Did you find a slip that meets your needs yet? My wife and I are purchasing a 27' Catalina at the end of January, and we are looking to eventually live on the boat somewhere in Seattle's waters. We plan to keep it at Shilshole until we find a liveaboard slip.

Let me know when you find something!

Jon

Well, we're currently moored up at Skyline Marina in Anacortes. We've got a great slip at the moment, but we're keeping our eyes out for good live-aboard marinas for next winter.

Check out Eagle Harbor Marina on Bainbridge Island. It's across the harbor from the town and you'll need to dinghy over if you take the ferry to the big city, but they have some space and their rates are almost half that of the marinas on the Winslow side.
