Sea Surge
This past weekend a blizzard warning was issued for here in Newfoundland but nothing of a possible sea surge. Friday night at 8:30 while watching a movie aboard our boat while tied to the brewery, I heard what I thought was machine gun fire. Once outside I saw that the sea had come up over the dock and was slapping on the underside of the dock boards sounding like rapid gun fire. Well I was knock down with the boat a couple years back and that was tense but nothing compared to this. I have posted to my blog the complete tale with pictures, if one is interested in more information. The sea was 15 feet above its high tide level.

Do you have any idea what this was? A rogue wave? Some underwater earthquake? I have not heard about this event at all, but a 15 ft surge, if it hit somewhere more populous, is enough to cause enormous destruction. The location of the buildings that were damaged or disappeared seems proof that this was totally unusual.
By the way, your website is very nice.

From what I understand is that there were three low pressures which joined just off Newfoundland and brought the sea level up by 15 feet above high tide, not a rouge wave trust me unless there were hundreds of them

There are reports coming in now that Conception Bay and Bell Island have also been damaged in areas of break walls and beaches.

OMG, that is incredible.... Great pictures. I'm so surprised you didn't suffer more damage to your vessel being tied up to the dock. Did the brewery suffer any damage? It looks like your boat is tied up right next to the walkway into the building. Hope the brew is ok. LoL (in the face of disaster a good stiff drink is often times necessary to keep reallity in perspective.... Walt Lindsey.)

The lost is in on Gray's stag and it appears to be about 80,000. The brewery was flooded about a foot, but an interesting thing was that there were two extension cords plugged together lying on the floor, next to the wall. The sea water having salt in it appears to have started a fire shorting the the cords, mostly smoke damage and small section on the wall, that was one of many things that happened that night.

An amazing story. Incredible photos. Glad you and yours are safe and sound. I'm going to go look for a brewery to tie up to, in case there's a sea surge (or something) around here.

Up date, Mr D Gray who lost his stag accross from me as well his boat and two motors. The boat and motors were found about 12 miles south of here up side down but no apparent damage.

Have now posted pictures for the Battery side to my blog of the destruction, and as a up date on Mr Gray he has his boat back and the motors are being made good after their swim in the ocean. It was the coast guard search and rescue who found the boat floating upside down about 12 miles down the south coast near Bay Bulls.
