San Francisco Live aboard slip (finally!) I could use help moving the boat.

Before you move her take her our for a run and make sure your overgrown prop and bottom is not a major issue. First apply full power at the dock and make sure you have power forward and reverse. You may have to spring for a diver to scrape the bottom and clean the prop. Try to pick an arrival time when the tide is near slack and the winds are low. Down here that would be early morning. Back up from the desired arrival time to decide when to set out possibly adding an extra hour for flexibility. Prepare in advance -lines on the cleats and ready to toss, fenders tied ready to drop.. Most marinas will be happy to have somebody to catch your lines if you radio ahead.
Enter the marina dead slow just enough to maintain progress and steering control. Once you turn into your slip use reverse to stop and cycle with forward until stopped in the slip. You should be close enough to use a boat hook to drop a prepared loop over a pile and pull tight to the dock. Then toss your dockside lines onto the dock. Step out and secure them leaving slack. Then get back on board , push off from the dock and drop loops over the outside pile(p). The final step is to talk to a neighbor and determine the adjustments you need to stay off the dock at high tide or just walk the dock and do what they do.

If its Emeryville, watch the tide. I've seen several boats drawing 7 feet or so go aground on the approach.

you will go nowhere with a fouled prop.
many have learned the hard way.
clean it first then go the bottom doesnt matter too much unless the cavitation prevents prop efficiency.
a ball of crap does not propel anything. a crappy hull adds time to voyage and some diameter to the turning radius and prevents rapid response
have fun with your move. add 2 hours to it, as nothing ever happens as planned, especially with dirty bottom. ha h aha ask me how i know this.... remember i been doing this since 1990 as a liveaboard with intermittent and full time cruising associated, so my experience is h aha ha ha limited.i am a noob sailor with only 60 yrs experience... ha ha h aha ha ..

Sorry all. I'm at work, and need every nickle obviously.

The new marina will be ready for me (papers signed, I's doted and such) on the 5th. I'll need to do a few things to make her perrty before the move too. Such as taking every chemical out of her. making sure wiring is all looking acceptable and safe (pretty minimal really).

Then I'm returning to Colorado the following weekend. So I'd like to have it moved by Saturday the 9th, if not sooner.

I'm leaving which marina accepted me off of this thread to keep them from getting swamped with calls from others trying to find live aboard slips too. Sorrry,..

Right now it's planning logistics and getting the new marina's money while still paying for the old marina (I didn't expect this slip offer any time soon).

Yeah, you know somehow, I think the marina staff would be able to handle the crippling onslaught of one or two calls this thread might conceivably generate.

Having born the brunt of similar comments in the past, Vancefish, don't mind fstbttms. He seems harmless and has good info on keeping a boat bottom clean, but can be a little demeaning at times.

Once inside the new Marina, don't travel any faster than you want to hit somebody/something.

The marina didn't notice I'd specified Live aboard only.

They claim they wanted to let me in anyway. However my two old dogs were not acceptable.

Yes,.. Very disapointing. I read the entire rule book a few times. The only rule about dogs was "must be leashed". Which would not be an issue either way.

The marina told me that they could not accomidate dogs. My dogs don't do much more then come and go, as I come and go. As a vigilent dog park attendee. I always clean up anything they leave (which is ONLY in grass).

Really very sorry Vancefish! We came to the Bay about 18 months ago as LA's and understand how difficult things can be. I do know that as of about 2 months ago (when I last read their rules) Half Moon Bay has moorings which are not governed by the State's LA laws. You can moor there pretty cheap (I think our 38'er would cost about 209 per month) and legally live aboard. It's on the Pacific side, but not far from SF.

We have had good fortune in the East Bay with our status, but it has always been by presenting ourselves in person to the HM and speaking with them, being very up front about being LA's.

We draw 6' so Vallejo didn't work for us either.

I should add that 209 is for a mooring the marina operates. There are also private moorings there, but I think they may rent for more when they are available.
