Sailing With a Cat in the Med

My wife and I leave mid June and are heading down the coast of Northern France across to Spain and doing the Med Circuit for year or so and eventually hoping to cross the Atlantic, we sail with our beloved cat Gladys, she has a pet passport and all her inoculations are up to date, has anyone heard or had any problems. The countries we plan on stopping initially are Spain, Italy, Malta and Greece and poss Cypress. any advice would be very much appreciated.

Re: Sailing With a Cat in the Med

pet passport, and rabies jabs should be enough for travel in europe,be careful letting the cat onshore in marinas as in many places poisened food is put down to kill rats

Note that pet passport has no use if travelling by private yacht. It does show inoculations though. Europe is not rabies free ( unlike UK ) so there are few issues. Going back to the UK may subject your pet to quarantine

Hi Dave thanks for that, yes as far as we are aware it's ok as long your not returning to the Uk and if so she would have come back into the country via courier after visiting a vet 24 hour prior, our main concern is free movement between the aforementioned countries around the med

Thanks

Not had a proper chance to use it yet other than a 2 week hop around Northern France early last year we took the boat out of the water in October last year and ripped her out, new electrics, installed new galley heads water system saloon and our cabin, chart area , it's been hard work but we both pack up work end of May and start heading south taking appx 3 years out

(Better) Listen to the horses mouth
(iow GB finally (sort of) joined the EU on this as well)
https://www.gov.uk/take-pet-abroad/overview
https://www.gov.uk/pet-travel-inform...nd-territories

Your pet needs:
* a microchip
* a rabies vaccination (make sure your pet is microchipped first or the vaccination won’t count)
* a pet passport or official third country veterinary certificate
* tapeworm treatment (for dogs only)

When you return to the UK:
"Staff" will scan your pet’s microchip and check your documents. (for a fee!)
If you don’t have the correct documents or your pet hasn’t been properly prepared it will be put into quarantine or sent back to the country it travelled from. You must pay the costs for this.

Enjoy (2Gladys2)

Just to reiterate , the EU pet passport only applies to transits via recognised routes , ie ferries , aircraft. If you arrive by yacht the scheme does not ensure your pet will not be quarantined in the UK.

We travelled fro the north of France last year to Croatia stopping at all countries and probably most ports along the way. Only once was out dogs pet passport ever asked for. (In Gibraltar). They hate dogs in Gibraltar. Signs everywhere saying dogs will be fined for crapping in the grass etc. that's ok tho We didn't think much if Gibraltar either. Most places I offered the pet passport but they either laughed or didn't care. A pussy will be no problems. Btw lots of great anchorages in northern Spain and Portugal. Make the most of your time there. Generally a lot cheaper than the med as well!
