Sailing on Faith: What Anchors Your Soul?

It seems like all sailors have something in common... the ability to sail into the unknown conditions, or finding themselves in a situation where everything changes, where they have to rely on faith.

Have you had an "OMG" moment onboard?
Has your sailing life strengthened your faith?
What do you believe in? Where does your faith lie?
What anchors your soul?

Honestly, i don't think an internet forum can provide a meaningful place for the discussion of religion/philosophy, by its sound-bite nature.

Yes, many. Except it would be lower-case “g” for me.

Has your sailing life strengthened your faith?

You bet. My faith in my partner, my friends, and the people I’ve got to know keeps getting stronger.

What do you believe in? Where does your faith lie?

Me, my friends and family, and people in general. Oh, any my depthsounder. Not so sure about that fancy chartplotter .

What anchors your soul?

Re: Sailing on Faith: What Anchors Your Soul?

Well, normally I would avoid this topic. However, YOU asked.

Have you had an "OMG" moment onboard?

I've had 'Oh $#!t' moments. I believe everyone has

Has your sailing life strengthened your faith?

No, my faith in science was well founded to begin with.

What do you believe in? Where does your faith lie?

I believe is science and the laws of physics.

What anchors your soul?

I don't believe there is such a thing as a 'soul'. It cannot be physically identified or scientifically quantified or qualified. I have consciousness, which requires no anchoring to this corporeal world

Re: Sailing on Faith: What Anchors Your Soul?

I doubt your query is well founded. Maybe you are looking at US sailing scene where people are mostly religious with the vast majority being deeply religious.

Elsewhere, sailors are just like the societies they grew up within: e.g. in France most seem lay while in Spain it seems like half of them are religious while the other half are lay. None seem to get suddenly religious once they step onboard.

That we all get **** scared at times does not imply we have what you call a faith.

In my particular case, it seems that the depth of my pocket anchors my soul: I cannot sail when the pocket is empty. I wish it were otherwise but you know real world real people real challenges.

My sailing and otherwise life taught me that where there is religion, there is war. Where there is faith there tends to be low willingness to observe the world, think, and respect all other forms of life.

Unless you mean my faith in that chafed halyard not to part overnight when clearing up a kite from an overboard drop tends to be such a mess. But I think this is not what you are after.

So, sorry, but no OMG moments from one who has sailed some miles.

YMMV

Cheers,
b.

I like Mike's post. Pretty much the same for me, 'cept I've got a Mantus. Don't use it as much as I'd like, as I'm still coastal/daysail.

Re: Sailing on Faith: What Anchors Your Soul?

I suspect many here have damp, drizzly November in their soul. Just before casting off.

“Call me Ishmael. Some years ago — never mind how long precisely — having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world. It is a way I have of driving off the spleen and regulating the circulation. Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people's hats off - then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can.”

I don't find this to be true. Myself, and other sailors that I know well, deal with the known phenomena and honor truth of the physical world. Few, if any, sail into the unknown and rely upon faith. Certainly, not "all sailors",- none that I have encountered!

Myself and my my friends who are sailors are a fairly empirical lot. Measure analyze and understand. The faith we have is in ourselves, knowing we understand and act accordingly.
