Sailboat Incinerator

Hi,
Worked offshore for years, one of my many jobs was welding....and since we decided to save up more money to buy the sailboat and be full time livaboards......I am thinking of making small incinerators for sailboats to hang on the aft of the boat.

Do you people that livaboard think you could use something like this for like 2-3 hundred????

Re: sailboat incinerator

I may catch heat for this but if it can burn easily it is probably biodegradable and therefore be dumped offshore within the law. There is a incinerating marine head that works well but draws a Lot of power. We've tried incinerating garbage at our farm and it requires a huge amount of heat and fuel.
Not to mention the safety aspects.

G'Day Max,

As a long term full time cruiser, i would not want nor would i tolerate an incinerator hanging from any part of my boat. Sorry not to be supportive of your idea for I appreciate efforts to help other cruisers and make a buck too, but I don't think this one will fly.

I've never found it hard to locate a safe place to burn rubbish ashore when needed, and at sea we compact as best we can and then store until we reach our destination.

Of course, others may disagree...

Jim

Welding is a really valuable skill around boats. If you can weld stainless and you can bring your equipment with you jobs will be everywhere. If outside the USA be aware there may be rules against it if you set up to compete with local tradesmen.

I don't know where these people are coming from that can store weeks worth of trash on board and not feel like a garbage scow. Whatever you do it needs to be hi temp and propane powered, collapsible and non corrosive, cheap and safe.

So what do you do with your garbage? Please don't tell me you throw any plastic overboard. You know if you had room to bring it on board you must have room to store the refuse.

Not that difficult to store garbage for many weeks on board.

First minimize or dispose of excess packaging when stocking.

Glass I break and toss in deep water. Plain paper will biodegrade. Food scraps biodegrade.

The stuff to store: Cans (crushed first) and plastic (flatten or cut up bottles and large pieces). Doesn't take much room.

Re: sailboat incinerator

Guy,

It's all in how you store it. One can, for instance, put the smelly stuff in airtight juice bottles or wide mouthed yoghurt containers. It's amazing how much plastic stuff you can jam into a 2 liter bottle, using a wooden spoon handle to push it down. We take the scissors to make the small pieces to fit into the narrow necks. It's really easy to do, and one winds up with compacted trash, segregated as to type.

Don't know what you have in the way of ocean passages behind you, but I tried it out last trip back from New Caledonia to Oz, and it was easy to do, and not smellly, and not even particularly time consuming, just part of after meal cleanup. Not rocket science.

I guess this is obvious, but nobody likes to have stinky garbage aboard.

Ann

So why should I waste space in my lazzerette for a garbage bag?

I did not say you throw plastic overboard. I asked a question but I apologize that you interpreted as an accusation.

You did imply pretty clearly that you don't store weeks worth of garbage on your boat.

So if you don't store it and don't throw it overboard what do you do with it?

I do store it and it stinks. I follow the MARPOL placard, it still stinks.

I have salt water pump in the galley sink and rinse out smelly stuff before I store it. Stink really isn't a problem.

That system seems to have quit on our boat and fresh is limited. Skanky plastic bags go into the trash. I can blame my wife for some of the problem as she is squeamish about throwing food things that float overboard, they stink too while rotting.
