RV After Cruising???

There's a LOT of the world to see other than near the water. My wife and I have been talking for a few years (basically right at the start of taking off to boat cruise) about getting a RV later and land cruising. I wonder how many other water cruisers have, or are considering, going land cruising after they are finished on the boat.

Nah, but a UK canal narrow boat might be a good option for us one day.

Its a completely different speed gently trundling along. A woman walking her dog walked passed us recently as we motored down the canal, but then what is the rush.

Funny you should ask… I’ve just been looking at camper vans.

Our cruising life continues to be ~ 1/2-year on the water, and 1/2 on land. This is mainly b/c we’re still cruising the cold areas of Canada, so it’s hard to be on the boat year round. This means we do ‘something else’ for the cold months.

So far that ‘something else’ has mostly included house sitting around the country. But we spent one winter motorcycling around Canada/USA, living mostly out of our tent. In that time we got to see the luxury life of a camper, so I’ve been thinking about it ever since.

I can very easily see us acquire a small camper of some sort. In our case though it wouldn’t be a move away from the boat. It would be part of the cycle of our annual life.

Something I've had on my list for years. My parents made a couple of RV trips once a circle around the US. They left GA and went west to CA then up the coast to WA then east through the northern states to ME then down the coast back to GA. They loved it and went back a few years later to fill in some of the gaps they missed on the first trip.

I think SV Jedi did something similar.

We have purchased a travel trailer and are leaving on a Grand Canyon, Spokane, snake river, and more this Thursday. Our R25 Ranger is on the market for a lucky buyer.

..thought of the same thing..but looking at the over all costs,ie, purchase of vehicles, maintenance, fuel, taxes,insurance, etc..would be better to just have a single vehicle and camp out at motels along the way..probably the costs over all would be cheaper not go the RV thingy ..

We have been on the boat for the last 3 years along the East Coast of the US. We recently decided to alter lifestyle a bit and include more land travel. The only vehicle we kept when we sold everything was an old Sprinter motorhome that has been perfect to get around the country to some places we have wanted to visit. We have just concluded that, for us, being on the boat full time or in the motorhome full time is just not as much fun as part time with flexibility each year to do whatever strikes our fancy.
I does help that we have friends with a large barn that will store the motorhome when we are on the boat but we have found some motorhome storage places that weren’t horrible if we needed it.
I suspect that living on the road in RV parks is similar to being in a marina except you have a car to get around (if you pull one). So life might not be too different. We have found that the small parks without electric are usually a lot like anchorages (although they often cost $10-15/night). We seek those when on the road and so far have had good luck. This summer will be a test.

Lol you turkey! You got me looking hard... Have an offer to sell me a 55 foot reverse layout narrow boat in September.. I will go view after return from Thailand.

(Not inexpensive are they?! )

Yes, we alternate between the two. The only problem with that is the added cost.

I think this works particularly well with the RV in North America (every climate and landscape available and very much geared towards accommodating RVers) and the boat in the Caribbean, Bahamas etc.

We are considering doing both at once. 8 Months cruising and 4 months RVing.

My wife would like to RV across America, me not so much. Maybe in a few years we’ll give it a try, but right now we have a boat in two different locations to do the endless summer routine.

That's quite a good size, the one we hired was 32ft, okay for a week but not permanently living on. Spent an afternoon chatting to a bloke with a 70ft narrow boat, former yachtie. He did admit that it was too long and needed a bow thruster. through some of the tight bends and bridges.

56/7 is the max footage in the smallest locks.. the bigger boats manage (just) by angling over the stern on left and bow on right to reduce length...) Getting caught on the Cill on one is a whole new nightmare...

I have always been intrigued by canal boats.



We were in a boat yard in Ireland a few years ago and met a guy refurbishing a canal boat. He tossed me the keys to have a look after knowing me for 2-3 hours. It was late at night when he gave us the keys and it had started to rain. It rained for the next few days and I did not want to take down the tarp to access the boat or drag dirt inside so we never did see the interior.



Never saw the guy again and I handed the keys back to the boat yard owners.



The exterior was really nice and we really wanted to see the interior.



A few months ago, YouTube showed me this guy's videos,

. He sold his house, bought a canal boat with no interior and off he went. Interesting to watch him build out the interior as well as seeing his life on the boat. It would be a very nice way to see the interior of UK, Ireland, and some of the other canalized EU. He has a decent video on putting in LiFePo batteries on the boat.
