Rugs on the Boat

I currently have 1 rug on the boat and plan more because they are nice underfoot. But it gets stinky all the time and needs to be hung outside to get over it.

Are there any rug types better for life on the boat?

Re: rugs on the boat

I have a hand-knotted oriental rug in the salon of my boat. It gets rolled up and stowed away when sailing. It has never been stinky and has never been hung on the rail. The boat is well ventilated (6 big dorades) and is generally not stinky, which probably plays a role. But wool is good, in any case.

Re: rugs on the boat

We have cork pads with cotton throw rugs on the fiberglass sole. The cork keeps them from shifting much and the rugs are washable.

I have thought about the indoor outdoor carpets such as these, but have not tried them yet.

Re: rugs on the boat

I have used commercial grade carpet to cover the fiberglass sole for the last 3 years now and have had no oder issues what so ever. It's made for high traffic and is somewhat water resistant. Liked it a little better than the indoor/door stuff as it is softer and comes in a lot of colors. Not to mention, its very cheap. Picked it up at the local carpet supply store.

We have a small Navajo rug for our cabin. All wool with natural dyes. We have an antislip thingy under it so it doesn't move. No stink!

Re: rugs on the boat

indoor outdoor carpet comes in a lotta grades... and the old school stuff IS yucky...

But for those looking for something that feels nice on the feet and holds up to water and is somewhat mildew resistant, the area rugs now available are in a different class. I haven't used one on the boat, but my mom has some that she uses on her patio where they get sun and rain, and pool water dripped all over them to say nothing of the lemonade and red wine my dad has hosed outta em...

And they feel good and have held up for seasons.

Always have rugs down and have never had them get stinky.

Master cabin, I put down carpet squares, lot nicer in the morning wiggling your toes in the carpet.

Same here. Ours wear out before they ever get stinky.

Re: rugs on the boat

The rug did get really soaked a while back during a rain storm that blew water under the dodger so hard it came though the boards.

Figured before I just replacedmit that I would see it ther was experience on a given rug type.

Re: rugs on the boat

We use rugs similar to this: Amazon.com: Safavieh Courtyard Indoor Outdoor CY1906-3103 2' 4" x 6' 7" Area Rug: Home & Garden. You can get them at Target, Lowe's, etc. for $20 - $40. We have never had them smell, but do clean and sun them once a month or so. Usually they only last 4-6 months before we replace them because they start to look a little worn. This may be because the dog loves to "dig holes" in the rug.

Re: Rugs on the Boat

Just use small 'rag rugs' - lift them when we're sailing cos they get kicked around.

Bought them cos they were cheap, washable and figured they were disposable; but they're still going strong (it's only been two years, tho)!

Re: Rugs on the Boat

On our sailboat we use a fake oriental rug purchased from Home Depot about 4 hrs ago...still going strong, and I believe it is made from nylon ... We hose it down about once every 3 months and otherwise just brush it with a hand broom. Easy care, still looks good...no stink.

Re: Rugs on the Boat

We have to have rugs because the dog slips too much on the bare teak. Our wool rugs held too much moisture and are odd shapes. I've been intrigued by these natural fiber rugs, which they say they will make to order: Area Rugs Cowhide Rugs Jute Rugs Outdoor Rugs Sisal Rugs Wool Rugs - Surface Threads

Re: Rugs on the Boat

Two heavy duty rugs at the bottom of the companion way, rubber backed so none slip. We take them home occasionally and chuck them through the washing machine. Does help protect the teak and holly floor from wet feet and scratches. Also gives the dogs something to grip on.

Re: Rugs on the Boat

Rugs are great souvenirs!

Sea Life has a Dolphin rug from Australia, a fruit one in Spanish from Indonesia, a fluffy one from Turkey and an authentic Egyptian Silk rug from Egypt - we were so lucky to get that one because the Egyptian said it was hand woven by a virgin in a far off village His Mother! Its not a rug its an Heirloom! He so wanted us to have it because we walked out of the shop 3 times and he ran after us always dropping the price! Amazing he was prepared to let us have it for so little. Well, little compared to the lifestyle of a Camel herder...

Anyway, they are great on boats and really a lovely way to constantly remind you of your travels. I tread on the Egyptian one with relish
