What is the point?

some definitions of Bum. Are not many of us Bums?

a person who devotes a great deal of time to a specified activity.
"a ski bum"
synonyms: enthusiast, fan, aficionado, lover, freak, nut, buff, fanatic, addict
"a ski bum"
verb
1.
travel, with no particular purpose or destination.
"he bummed around Florida for a few months"
synonyms: loaf, lounge, idle, wander, drift, meander, dawdle; More
No, I do it because some people (like you) seem to be mixed up and combine legitimate cruisers (like me and most others on this forum) with homeless bums living on derelic boats (like most in Richardson Bay) into one big cruiser category.

Seems to me, if there were more people living in Saucalito who agreed with the non-politically correct people (like me) and the locals began enforcing the rules and rid the harbor of derelic boats, fewer people would be dying in the storms or having their wrecks wash up on shore.

Re: Richardson Bay liveaboards, heads up!

Cruiser is a hard thing to define, some stop for awhile, then continue on etc. however I don't think I ever said they were "cruisers"
The title of the thread is " Richardsons bay liveaboards, heads up" I don't see cruisers in there either.
Where did you get cruisers from?

Has anyone accused you of living aboard in Richardson's Bay?

I am so glad there are sensible people in california.

Gee Ken if you were anchored in Richardson Bay, the fine folks on Belvadeer would think you're a bum too. Even with a 50+ oyster. To them, if it does not come with at least 5 crew and a chef and ideally a helicopter pad, it's a bum boat.

It's all a matter of prospective. So welcome to the life....

It is sad that folks have to die in RB, The sad thing is, it's one of the more protected anchorages in the bay. (Though wide open to the southern storms). While there are other locations for a few boats here or there, most locations from SF bay down to Cabo are the same (wide open in at least one direction. Moro bay is full, Socal does not want anchoring boats period.

I did drop an anchor in Richardson Bay for a day seven years ago aboard our Hunter, and also had a slip nearby for a month. So.... yes I do know what I'm talking about regarding looking at the derelict wrecks sitting in the harbor.

You really don't see junk moored in harbors with people living aboard in the Med. Why is it like this in California including the harbors in So Cal?

So how do you consider it to be "sensible" or compassionate to allow derelict boats to anchor illegally, which then places the occupants of those boats (wrecks) in danger during storms along with the local rescue personnel?

California is advertising regularly on UK tv for people to go and live there. Looks marvellous, folk going to parties, skiing down sand hills, seeing the sites and enjoying a really high quality of life.

It's compassionate because they are not sleeping in a carbboard box on the street. Storms are never fun. I've sat out more then a few. Even once in RB

I know that about 50 percent of the boats in RB are actually pretty seaworthy Least to my eye. Yes there are the derelict's too, more then a few and there but for the grace of god go I.

You just want to get rid of the boats and put the people on the street. Many have jobs ashore, many are retired on a "Fixed" income. With rents of $1500 for a one bedroom apartment, Most just can't afford it. I sure can't. But then I was living aboard when I was making $90K so I was ahead of the curve.

As to being illegal, many were anchoring there when the RBRA passed the 72 limit without representation or input from the anchor outs. Myself I think it's wrong to criminalize homelessness which is how some in California sees the anchor outs. Really the RBRA sole purpose was to remove the anchor outs.

The issue is funding with Sausalito balking at tossing good money after bad. On the Plus side the Marin water cops are being proactive at trying to enforce the 72 hour rule for newcomers. Really nice guys.

California is lovely, beaches, mountains, vineyards out the wazoo a few large cities with all the shows, plays and festivals you could want. the sierra's all within a 4 hour drive. Lots and lots to see and do and the weather is nice for 8 months of the year. OK the weather is nice all year round if your from seattle or points north. Mind you SF is not as straight laced as LA for some reason. With the bay to breakers foot races (sometimes clothing optional) to the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival (It ain't about bluegrass) and such sailing events as the "Three Bridge fiasco" and the transpac. So lots going for it

But a 1200 SF fixer upper might be anywhere from $500K to $1 Million (or more) depending on location. Electric rates start at 18 cents a kw and go to 40 cents a kw (demand charges coming soon). taxes (sales, property and state and city) are high as is food. But if you make 150-200K a year it's not too bad.

Boats and marina's on the other hand are fairly inexpensive least compared to east coast marina's. Of course the trick is getting a slip and a liveaboard slip is getting hard to find.

As to low rate housing for the down and out. It's non-existent.
